You Don't Diss Dwight

It's no secret that we here at RazorbackExpats consider Dwight Stewart not only a great figure in Razorback history, but possibly one of the finest Americans ever. And we are shocked (shocked!) to discover that there are people out there who don't share this view - namely North Carolina Tar Heel fans.
The blog Tar Heel Fan is ranking the North Carolina basketball teams of the past 27 seasons. Coming in at No. 6 on the list is the 1995 squad, which, you may recall, was defeated by the Razorbacks in the Final Four.
The blogger describes the last few seconds of the first half of that game (click here for a visual reminder) this way: "Arkansas with barely enough time to get the ball upcourt inbounded it to that tub of a human being Dwight Stewart who just chucked it from about 60 feet or so and made the shot at the buzzer."
Tub of a human being!?! Them's fighting words. And believe us, after growing up on the mean streets of The Heights and Pleasant Valley and attending a private liberal arts college, we know a thing or two about throwing our fists around.
The crimes against humanity continue in the comments thread, where one commenter says, "I hate Dwight Stewart to this day."
Honestly, we are speechless ... except to say this: "Go Duke."

One of the beautiful things about the national championship team was its depth. You could see opposing fans get excited to see Corliss Williamson pick up his third or fourth foul, only to see their smiles turn upside down when Stewart replaced him. And while he had the size of a big center in the paint when needed, he also had those soft hands around the arc. I remember the Syracuse game at Austin in the 1995 NCAA 2d round; his treys kept the Hogs in the game and constantly deflated the ‘cuse fans — and the Longhorn fans, always salivating over the chance their old SWC nemesis might lose a game. But it didn’t happen that day.
Did that Tarheel blogger mention how thoroughly Williamson owned Wallace and Stackhouse that game? Just curious.

I love this article, except the ending: “Go Duke.” I understand the concept, but I will never be in favor of Duke for anything, even playing UNC.
Duke is right behind Texas in my ranking of evil opponents.

Guys, having another team hate one of our players is certainly a good thing. As you pointed out, it means that he was good! I would love to see Casey Dick inspire some hate this season. And may Ryan Mallet after him just turn the stomachs of LSU, Auburn, and especially Ole Miss fans! I have my own hate list of SEC players, and it wasn’t because they played poorly against the Hogs! Yeah, I am talking about you three named, John Parker Wilson, who seems to be so-so or worse against everybody who isn’t in a Hog uniform.

Kev,
Totally agree. The post was meant to be good-natured and tongue-in-cheek.
Tab,
I’m no fan of Duke, either. It was just said in the spirit of light-hearted trash talk.

… Go Blue Devils… (whenever not playing us or another SEC team).

Off the subject,
I am so sick and tired of hearing how great the Big Ten is already!!! Nothing I’ve read, with the exception of the hog-blogs, tells it like it is…
OVERRATED.

Hey, did either of you see Matteral Richardson (who ended the LSU game with a great pick) last night intercept the Pillsbury Throw Boy (formerly of Kentucky) at the end of the Hall of Fame game? I like to think of this, even though it was done by a former Hog, as a good omen for things to come this season for our present Hogs. With all the sour media speculation about the Hogs’ chances, hey, I’ll take whatever I can get!

Nice blog but you seem to be a little overly sensitive about the comments made on TarHeelFan. I read both posts and there was little content in the post that was really offensive. Your blogger put the links in, read the post or better yest – post the text that covers hog country. You won the National Championship, great work it was a good team, the guy has weight on him aka tub, easy there Francis. It’s not like the 2008 team post went on an on about the last meeting of the two teams. Anyway, I like the site you have but pulling for Duke, basketball or football former home of Spurrier and now the Vol coach is just too much. Let’s get real here, “you” are pissed because Butch Davis has integrity and didn’t leave UNC after his first year. He’s a great coach, we are excited to have him at UNC, he may well yet end-up in Arkansas so treat him right.
