Random Musings About Patrick Beverley

Warning: this post contains enough rampant speculation and uninformed commentary to make Buzz Bissinger's head explode.

AP photo/Beth HallAs Stephen noted yesterday, Patrick Beverley is out for the season and that definitely "kinda sucks". That alone is certainly bad enough news (interesting that both the football and basketball teams are now entirely in rebuilding mode), but it seems like there's a larger issue out there going undiscussed: will Beverley ever don a Razorback uniform again?

After a stellar freshman season, Beverley's performance was a bit disappointing last year. Maybe it was a garden variety sophomore slump, but reading between the lines it's easy to speculate that things were never quite right between him and John Pelphrey. I have no idea what they would have clashed about or why, but the fact that Beverley gave serious thought to transferring to South Florida (and Stan Heath) after the season indicates that something was amiss in that relationship.

As for the actual announcement that he won't be playing next year, it seems a little fishy. Totally absent the usual language about academics or the ubiquitous "violation of team rules" it certainly raises more questions than it answers...one would think that if the reason for his not playing were one of those garden-variety issues we'd know more about it.

So, given all the various factors at play, I'll go out on a limb and predict that Patrick Beverley has played his last game as a Hog. You can take some comfort in the fact that I'm often wrong, but that's how I'm seeing it. What do you think? I'd be very interested to hear your thoughts in the comments section.

Guys, all I can offer is speculation as well. As you mentioned, there might be a serious personality clash between coach and player? Maybe Beverly thinks Stan Heath was dealt a bad hand at Arkansas after he did take us to the tournament and got fired anyway? There might be a racial resentment there as well? Working with students and student athletes as well, I know there are FERPA rules regarding privacy of academic information. (Interestingly, if Patrick were dead they could tell you all that you wanted to know about his academic performance at the UofA. Academic privacy doesn’t exist for the dead.) Outside of garden variety? Hmm, I just don’t know. If he had been arrested, I am sure some Hog fan would have the Washington County booking photo on-line by now. Maybe he got into some trouble outside of Arkansas? Maybe he just parked in Pelphry’s parking spot one too many times? Haha.

This is so depressing. KHog’s speculation about bad blood between Beverley and Pel seems real world. But, wow. How does this happen? We have, what? a staff of 20? devoted to keeping these guys on track academically. (I note it seems impossible that a hoopster can make grades during the regular academic year. If he then spends all summer in camps, how can he “maintain academic progress”?) How do you let a kid get so far behind that he is not just out for the fall semester, but for the entire year?

This is more than bad news for the Hogs, who were pretty much gonna suck this year anyway. It is awful news for Beverley. He is not ready for the NBA, and guys who leave college for Israel or some such rarely make it back to the Show. My goodness. This is a disaster.

For the first time, I feel a little quake in my Pelphrey love. You got to block and tackle, son. And that means keeping the kids on track.

Bad times.

Guys, I don’t think this has anything to do with past bad blood between Beverley and Pelphrey. I also don’t think Pelphrey would allow one of his players to skip class without being on top of the situation and ensuring it didn’t happen again.

There’s a story going around that right now is just a rumor, but it makes a lot of sense. I hear Beverley was caught cheating on one of his final exams. That would explain why the coaching staff was seemingly blind sided by this. It would also explain why Beverley is ineligible for the entire year rather than a semester.

I’m with R.L. After I read Sunday’s paper, that was the comment I made to my spouse—it must be cheating. As of Thursday, it sounded like Pelphrey was still counting on Beverly as part of the team.
Nothing else would have been as quick and sudden as this, with “no comment”. If he had simply flunked out, the explanation would have been worded so we could have read that between the lines. I figure he still has to go up before judicial???
Can he be readmitted in a year?

What course did he cheat in? Swimming pool management? Parks and recreation? or pottery making? Did he really need to cheat? Where his courses that tough? We were gonna stink anyway. Don’t get me wrong, I hate to see the kid go, but you could tell last season he didn’t want to be there. Lord, I am just ready for football season so we can finally see what Casey Dick can do. People seem to forget that he was loved enormously when he came in for Robert (no throws) Johnson. People seem to forget he is a pretty good qb (with good reason due to McFadden and Jones.) Dick will shine again!!

I will be on the ole miss sidelines for the Memphis-Old Miss game— Who should I root for? Suggestions welcome

Well, R.L., that certainly makes sense.

Hmm. I normally don’t like to see SEC teams lose to out of conference opponents, but I think I can make an exception in this case. Root for Memphis. I could have wished Nutt well if he had landed with say Baylor or Georgia Tech, but a division foe? A pox on him for every game!

No doubt something out of the ordinary law-breaking, class-flunking, coach-dissing event is happening with Beverly.

Cheating on an exam sounds plausible, but I’m sure someone will imagine something just as likely.

To be honest, we were going to suck next year anyway, with or without PB. Now, I think we’re in for a season of hell. In the SEC, two wins is very probable. How many players will be on the roster? Nine?

One thing about Pelphrey is he should never have been caught with so few players on scholarship. He could have brought in some more JUCO kids for a year or two and make us somewhat competitive.

As the saying goes, inquiring minds want to know about Beverly. Maybe someone will find out the info over the next year.
