Thursday Evening Hodge Podge

* Wondering what a 4 point win over a Division I-AA team looks like (since it wasn't shown on TV)? A new blog called Coach Petrino has a clip of the highlights...that big Casey Dick pass on 4th & 10 late in the game really was a pretty sweet play.

* We posted our ballot for the SEC Power Poll earlier this week, but what did the final tally look like? The complete results are now posted at Garnet and Black Attack (spoiler alert: the Hogs are not ranked #1).

* Peyton Hillis deserves some props for winning the starting FB job in Denver (despite being picked in the last round of the draft and getting injured during training camp). Given the Broncos' emphasis on the run, this should be a great spot for him.

* Nobody beats the Razorbloggers for their consistently strong coverage of the Hogs, but we have to take issue with their calling out of Jim Harris for lousy sportswriting. There are plenty of worthwhile targets for that accusation, but Harris is one guy who absolutely doesn't belong on that list. From where we sit, Houston Nutt is part of this season's storyline (a smaller part than Petrino, but still a part of it)...there's nothing wrong with Harris or anyone else referencing him.

* Courtesy of the Slophouse, our man D-Mac professes his allegiance to both the Raiders and the Razorbacks. Speaking of McFadden, it turns out that I'll be in the stands at the Oakland Coliseum for his (and Hillis') NFL debut on Monday night...very exciting! Expect a full report on Tuesday.

I think the whole point of calling out Jim Harris, was to emphasize how redicules it is to compare Bobby Petrino to Houston Nutt. Come on, are you kidding me? By saying, or suggesting that maybe Houston wasn’t really all that bad, because of a close call with a Div. II team, under the watch of Bobby Petrino, is like saying Houston alway’s played as many as 16 Freshmen to start off a new season when he was coach. If Houston Nutt coaches the Hogs in that game, and play’s 16 Freshmen, starting 6 of them, we lose that game. ’Nough said!

Oh, by the way. After inheriting another talented football team, the same way he did back in ‘98, I must say Nutt’s debut as HC of the Ole Miss Rebles, was less than impressive. The offense was full of big plays, for big yardage, but not exactly consistant. When your team has to rely on big plays to sucseed, your looking at a recipe for disaster. ( ala Razorback football, 2007) Who the hell is Memphis anyway? A Div. I program, not much better than the Div. II team the Hogs played the other night. Oh, and by the way, they scored 24 points too. If you want to get a better dose of the way a Nutt coached team play’s, then check out the Wake Forrest game this Saturday. Comepare how the stats measure up when Nutt coaches against a solid football team.

John, I envy your getting to see D-Mac and Hillis start their pro careers. I hope they both have a great night of it. I’ll be calling the Hogs in Little Rock on Saturday night. And will probably spend a few moments wishing that McFadden and Hillis were there! haha. Oh, what might have been if Petrino and company had arrived a year earlier. Put Monk, Hillis, McFadden, Jones and a functioning Dick, haha, on the field at the same time with Petrino calling the plays, oh boy!
