Arkansas vs Alabama: Thanks for the Memories

Madre Hill vs Alabama; courtesy of hogdb.com

The Hogs and the Tide have given us some truly great games over the past 16 years. So, while we gear up for the tussle in Fayetteville this Saturday, consider this an open thread to discuss your favorites. Which games meant the most to you? Where were you when they happened? Or, on the flip side which losses still burn the most?

We'll be looking forward to seeing what you have to say in the comments section. As a quick cheat sheet, here's the full list of Arkansas-Alabama results since the Razorbacks joined the SEC:

Kind of weird to comment on my own post, but I’ll get things started here. Favorite win had to be that improbable Lunney-to-Meadors victory in 1995…so unexpected given our history vs Bama up until that point.

2006 was another fun one, though. Most brutal loss has to be 2007…no further comment necessary.

For me the most memorable Alabama game has to be the 2000 game. It was the first time I ever watched a game inside Razorback Stadium, and is the basis for my obsession with all Razorback sports.
I had lived in fayetteville for about 7 years and had seen parts of games from the hill on the northeast side of the stadium, and I had watched games on tv, but I never really was all that interested in Football. That year though I decided to park cars for FHS and by doing so was allowed to go to the football game for free. I remember the pigscreen looking beautiful as it was only a few months old, the renovations to the stadium were underway, which made the stadium look messy, much more so because it was raining and there seemed to be mud everywhere. I remember hearing the crowd BOO at our own team and then feeling relieved once I found out who Boo Williams was.

I can’t really remember much of the game itself, much more of my memory was dedicated to remembering the person next to me that seemed to get drunker and drunker and was eventually kicked out and also remembering how good it felt to walk out of that stadium after the win, seeing so many people high-fiving, smiling, calling the hogs after the game. And even though I was cold and wet, I knew I had to be fan.

‘06 for a "I can’t believe" we won that game moment, but ‘07 felt like just the opposite when Sarah Jessica Parker Wilson’s last second TD pass felt like a punch in the face.

I find it interesting that out of Arkansas’ 7 wins against Bama since 1992, only 2 have been by more than 7 points (‘98 & ’04). The other five wins were by a combined 13 points, which is going to make this weekend’s blowout of Bama that much more sweeter! Go Hogs!

‘06 was definitely one of my favorites as well. Remember how the hogs kept a critical drive alive by running a legit student-body-left play on 3rd and 4 with less than two minutes to go? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bsw3biY9ak
Not to mention the fact that this was yet another overtime victory in the Nutt era, even if Alabama’s missed PAT was a gift. Fayetteville was rocking that night.

The 2003 game was pretty sweet too: The Hogs were down 31-10 midway through the third quarter and came back to win it in double overtime.

Let me preface this by saying I was never a Hog fan until I stepped on campus during Fall 2005. 2005 was, of course, not an optimal time to become a Razorback fan. Still, I could appreciate the devotion of other Hog fans.
HDN’s teams, post 2005, were not generally known for their pass defense. During the 2006 ‘Bama game, I got pissed off at the defense (as usual), and left to watch the game on TV. So, instead of being there to watch Leigh Tiffin choak, I watched it from my buddy’s room in the quad.
On the other hand, the most stinging loss was the 2007 ‘Bama game. Not because it was a game we won and couldn’t hold on to, not because it completely dropped us from the rankings, not because unranked Alabama ended up taking our spot at #13 after the win, but because it was the precursor to a comparitively dissappointing season (with a loss to Kentucky and a last-minute loss to a ranked Auburn team).

The 2004 victory stands out to me, for I was there in Fayetteville at the game with my brother and mother. It was my first (and so far only) chance to see Arkansas play Alabama. I was there on campus in 1998 and foolishly, haha, let all consuming graduate school over-ride football watching as a priority, so I missed that great beat down of the Tide. I can still see Matt Jones in the 2004 game weaving amongst Alabama defenders for a touchdown. That was also the game where I realized that this Mike Shula fella should be Alabama’s coach forever. Nothing would have been better for the rest of the SEC!

I remember the 2003 game as a game a buddy of mine and I almost went to, but didn’t. I was living in Nashville, and he was living in Indiana, and we were going to make a trip to T-town. Our ticket source, however, fell through, and as a rain storm delayed the game and flooded the stands and as Alabama flooded the score board with easy scores, my friend and I felt like we had been saved from a very bad trip. Of course, now we wish we had been there to see the great rally from behind that took place and the thrilling overtime. I have that game on tape and have watched it during the slow summer months when football season seems like it will never get here.

I plan on tapping this next game in the series. I have to attend an Oklahoma State recruiting event during the first half. The final score will dictate if the tape is a keeper or not. I’ll make my mouth talk about the wonders of Oklahoma State, but my mind and heart will be with the wonders of Arkansas vs. Alabama in the good ole SEC.

2003, hands down. The ’06 game was amazing too, if for no other reason than watching Leigh Tiffin literally hand us the game. But ’03 was amazing.

My church was having some kind of fellowship, and we had actually worked it out to project the game onto a white wall in our fellowship hall. Not very exciting for a while as there was a long weather delay; I heard Matt Jones went inside and took a nap. (In retrospect, maybe he was snuffing. Or maybe both.)

Then the game began, and boy did we stink. By halftime our group of Baptists was not happy. I went outside for a while, but we had a radio out there with the ARSN broadcast, so I couldn’t avoid the slaughter.

Well, you all know what happened…31-10 somehow became 31-31, and I guarantee you that your sports bar had nothing on a Baptist fellowship hall that was calling the Hogs.

34-31, 2OT. Life was wonderful and God was good, all the time.

It had to be 1995 when little JJ Meadors caught that ball right on the line and scored a touchdown for AR which won the game. WOO PIG SOOIE!!

Hi,
I enjoyed reading about articles and people’s comments.
