A Passing Fancy

As the Hogs gear up to take on a team coached by a guy who's said to know a thing or two about the passing game, I figured now would be a good time to comment on an item I saw over at the always-excellent Hog Database.

The gist of it is that, with his 385 yard game against Tulsa, Mr. Casey Dick now has three of the 10 highest single game passing totals in Arkansas history. Granted, the Razorbacks have had a somewhat checkered relationship with the concept of the forward pass over the years, but that achievement still deserves a shout-out.

Here's the full top 10 (courtesy of the Hog Database):

A few thoughts:

* at this point a year or two ago, how surprised would you have been if someone from the future had shown you this list?

* Clint Stoerner has four games on the list...with three (or four...fingers crossed) left in his Razorback career, what are the odds that Casey will match or surpass him?

* what will this list look like in a few more years? Something tells me we'll be seeing the name Ryan Mallett on here more than a few times.

Incidentally, the above graphic was taken from the Hog Database's more complete list of the top 38 individual passing games in Razorback history. Some fascinating trivia there...definitely check it out.

I agree! I’ve been impressed by the multiple 100+ yard games by Smith and the number of 300+ yard games by Dick. Petrino has done well in his first season in bringing a cool balanced offense to the Razorbacks. I definitely think Dick will put up another 300+ yarder this season and Smith will put up a couple 100+ yarders. If we can get both against LSU or South Carolina this week, we will go to a bowl game. Either way, I’m sure this program is on the right path. Love your site and insight, Jeremy

I scanned over all 38 games, and if you need more evidence that Arkansas is just not the best of bowl teams, I noticed where only one of those 38 involved a bowl game – 1981 Gator bowl. Which was a loss! Sure would like to see the Casey Dick Hogs get to a bowl game, and Casey Dick put another high passing day in the record books that equals a bowl win for a change.

Whoops. A bit bleary eyed this morning. Bill Montgomery did get a bowl win in the Sugar on New Years day 1970. So make that two out of 38! Hopefully Ryan Mallet or some future Petrino created pigskin throwing machine will join old Bill as a Sugar Bowl winning QB.

Whoops again. Damn it, I am just not on my game this morning. That ’70 game was a loss too! It was ’69 over Georgia that the Hogs won the Sugar Bowl. So both bowl games on the 38 list were losses. Yeah, remind me. Why do we want to get bowl eligible? haha.

@Jeremy – thanks for the comment and the kind words.

@Kevin – perhaps in that parallel universe we were discussing yesterday the Hogs are dominant in bowl games. Or is that stretching the boundaries of even quantum physics?

I’ll get the physics professors over here at OSU working on it, John. But I think they might come up with an equation saying just that, haha. Arkansas dominant in bowl games? The boundaries of quantum physics and credulity stretched too far! AHHHHHH!!! But hopefully Bobby Petrino can do a better job than past Hog coaches at putting together a winning equation at the end of football seasons. One that will better reward Arkansas fans who have put a lot of these dollar signs $ into past equations that have produced poor results on the other side of the equal sign.
