J. Hawg's Pick 10

Another dismal week on the Pick 10 front, as I only got four out of ten right. This picking against the spread thing is hard. Just one more reason why Vegas makes money.

Responding to my Hodge Podge, commenter Drew argues against a playoff for college foo-ball. Apparently, he favors this (which I shamelessly stole from The Sporting Blog):

Frankly, I can't see any reason why we shouldn't have a playoff. Bowls are boring and meaningless, vestiges of a by-gone era. Give me eight teams (we can argue about how to pick them) and play them down and every one of those seven games becomes meaningful. Instead of only two or three teams with a chance to win it all, you get eight. Television ratings will soar, money will flow, I'll stay interested.

Here's my picks this week, although I can save you the trouble of reading. I picked all the home teams to cover. This surely won't actually happen, but it has as much chance of happening as whatever I would pick otherwise. So, the text below has been made up to fit the pre-selection.

SEC

Tennessee (+3.5) at Vanderbilt: Honest. That's not a mistake. Vanderbilt is giving points to Tennessee. I think I felt a slight tremor in the earth, which was probably General Neyland rolling over in his grave. When the bookies call it for the Dores, it is officially time to get worried, but the system says FAVE.

Arkansas (-1.5) at Missi State: If Michael Smith is actually healthy, the Hogs should win, despite the Double Dick situation at QB. The entire fate of the team rests on one undersized running back . . . system says DOG.

Ole Miss (+3.5) at LSU: I can see this going either way. I think these teams are evenly matched. Question is, will the Rebels pull the late-season Nutt-loss? Fortunately, I don't have to make the choice because the system says FAVE.

OTHER

Michigan (+21) at Ohio State: This line looks almost as odd as the Vanderbilt one. Honestly, I think Michigan will stay within three TDs, but system says FAVE.

Michigan St. (+14) at Penn State: At one point I thought Joe Pa's final team was pretty good. Now I see them going to a boring bowl and getting the snot beat out of them. The game is in State College, so FAVE.

BYU (+7) at Utah: In Utah, they call this "the Holy War." Those Utahites, what comedians! On general principles, I root against BYU. So the system works! FAVE.

Pitt (+5) at Cincinnati: A preview of the new Vols coach? Yes, it's Wannstadt!! FAVE.

Florida State (-1) at Maryland: Arrrggh. The Terps won last week, which means they will surely crash and burn this week. But the system says DOG.

Texas Tech (+7) at Oklahoma: Here is where we find out if the Red Raiders are for real. Yeah, they beat the Longhorns, but that was in Lubbock and Lubbock can hurt your soul. I like the system pick, FAVE.

U Conn (+3) at South Florida: Man, I'm glad I have a system, because I have no idea about this one. FAVE.

Somehow, it just wouldn’t surprise me at all if the Hogs come out completely flat against Miss. State with plenty of repeating of all their mistakes of the season gone by. There would be plenty of shoulder scrunching at the end with statements of “I guess they wanted it more.” BLAH! I sure hope that doesn’t happen, but I wouldn’t be shocked if it did. With something on the line, a bowl berth, I fear the return of the Keystone Cops, Don’t Really Care, Cotton Bowl team of January in one or both of these last two games. Somebody, please convince me that this certainly won’t happen.

You gotta feel like with Petrino being a good tactical coach, he’ll have a solid game plan following the two weeks of preparation for Miss. State. Unfortunately, we’re stuck with the same question we’ve been asking since game 1 of this year: how many boneheaded plays will our young guys (or senior QB) make that might nullify a good game plan? In other words, I personally don’t think there’s any way to predict how our boys will preform, Kevinhog. I guess the only certainty is that the sky is not the limit, the ground is.

I hope the Petrino factor will be enough, DALLA$. But if something bad happens at the start of the game, this team just has a way of letting it snowball on them. I think a missed field goal or missed extra point try during the first series will be the kiss of death. I hope we can get fast starts, like in the Tulsa game, and build upon them. And it sure would be nice to see a game end with the Hogs comfortably in the lead! But maybe I am asking too much, haha, for that to happen with the Drama Hogs of 2008.

Even though I can’t tell if you’re mocking me or trying to share a laugh with me, I will admit that flow chart is pretty funny (and eerily similar to reality in some cases). However, I don’t feel that the bowls are boring. The only one that bums me out is the that one that starts like a week before the rest and features two nobodies (does anyone know which one I’m talking about?). After that, it’s like a solid 3 weeks of football, with a game on every night. But, in a larger sense, I think my point was that a playoff is a short term solution at best. All it will take is a few star players getting majorly injured in an early playoff game to turn everyone against playoffs, and then where will we be? In my opinion, the BCS isn’t broken. Sure, there’s a few monkey wrenches, but it ain’t broken.

I was just looking for an excuse to post that chart, Drew, no mocking. But I do disagree on playoffs.

Guys, we are about to lose to Miss. State for the first time in this century. A tough day to be a Hog. Nobody convinced me we wouldn’t come out flat and lose to these guys. I think that was because we all felt this was the likely outcome. We haven’t been a good team coming off a bye week for a long time. The big flatness was on the defense’s side this time. They couldn’t stop the worse offense in the SEC. Made them look like world beaters. I’ll be there for the LSU game, our bowl game, and hope they can end this forgetful season on a better note.
