What's a Hog Fan to Do?

gator_fans_2007TideFan

Well, the Hogs' season is over, but the race to the national championship kicks into high gear this weekend with the SEC and Big 12 championship games.

The SEC contest features two of my least favorite teams (along with Tennessee and sometimes Georgia, they are the only football teams in the conference that I would say I hate). I'm trying to figure out which one I will root for (or more accurately, which team would cause me less angst to see win). If I didn't live in Atlanta, I would probably forget about the game altogether, but the imminent invasion of jorts-wearing and Molly Hatchet-loving fans will make it nearly impossible to do so.

So, I turn to you, our faithful tens of readers, to ask for advice: Which team should I pull for?

It will be a great game, as good as any of the bowl games. I have no particular hate for either Florida or Alabama, really.

Charlie,

I’m a small, petty man.

I just read over the SEC rulebook and it says that if the championship game goes into the 10th OT without a victor being determined, the championship goes to the owner of the Boot.

A strange rule, to be sure, but I think we should pull for that outcome.

I say Florida… No particular reason other than having two, one-lose teams will make the BCS a bigger mess and may lead to its downfall.

While I’m not fond of either school I’ll be pulling for Bama. Why? I’m a closet OU fan (blame my Dad ;^) and I think the Sooners would embarrass the Tide more easily. ;^)

Pull for Florida. Meyer’s no Grandma Bess, but Saban is the biggest jerk in college football, and I will hate Bama even more than LSU for as long as he’s there.

Skywalker,

As much as I’m excited about Petrino coaching the Hogs, I’m not sure Hog fans have a lot of room to criticize an opposing coach for being an a-hole.

Florida.

They are not in our division and Tebow needs to move on the NFL before next year. With a NC and a Heisman surely he will leave.

by BlindHog on Dec 2, 2008 4:28 PM CST reply actions

I’ll pull for Alabama. If they pull off the NC then they’ll have a letdown season next year.

Also, Am I a dolt for pulling for any team from our conference to do well when against a non-conference opponent? I mean it’s like “I can kick the crap my brother but if you look at him the wrong way…” kind of situation. I mean doesn’t the UA profit when SEC schools win their bowls with the bigger bowl payout pot? How do guys feel about it?

PS…I know I’m a dolt. Just answer the Q.

blindhog, he’s already got one of both :/

I will have to root for Florida.
They are playing the best football in the country. (my opinion of course)
I honestly believe that Florida will wind up playing Texas in the NC, and OU will be stuck with playing the Tide in the 2nd best BCS bowl game.
OU is probably the only team out there with almost as much team speed as the Gators, and I think OU also has the best passing QB in the country. Too bad they didn’t beat the LongHorns. I would much rather see a Florida vs. OU matchup.

I hate Nick Saban and the U of Alabama, so rooting for the Gators is pretty easy for me anyway.

I’m with ARKBEAR. It is the “my brother” deal. First, I root for my team, then I root for our conference, and within the conference, the team that is in our division. The ‘closer’ we are to the winning team, the better we look. (Now, all bets were off on all of that when we were in SWC with Texas! AND, it would be extra hard,or impossible, to root for ole miss this year)!

P.S. Maybe I’m a dolt, too?

For the love of our sanity, root for Florida. I can’t imagine how horrendously obnoxious Bama fans will become if they win this.

Well, it’s looks like my previous comment has been blown completely out of the water.
I was unaware that the redicules BCS sytem, that is now in place,(computers)has already decided that OU is the champion of the Big 12 South. Amazing!
Is this what we’ve come to? living with the fact that head-to-head matchups mean absolutely nothing anymore?
If that’s the case, then why play any of the games?
Why not just ask the schools to fax in their starting rosters at the beginning of the season, and let the computers decide who would win those games, enstead of going though all that mess with the actual game itself?
Look at all the injuries we would save.
After the computers play our season for us, they could fax a NC notice to the school that won it, and send them the Trophy via Federal Exspress.

It seems to me that if you can ignore the result of 1 game, then surely you can just figure in the rest of them as well.

by GonzoHog on Dec 3, 2008 8:44 AM CST reply actions

One other thing; if the Big 12 honestly believes that their system works, then why in the hell do they have North and South divisions?
If their intent is to actually crown a Big 12 champion, by virtue of the BCS, and OU, UT and TT are the best three in that order, then why wouldn’t you have OU and Texas playing each other for the Big 12 championship to begin with?
What a mess the Big 12 officials have made. I hope you guys are really proud of yourself!

by GonzoHog on Dec 3, 2008 8:57 AM CST reply actions

I’m glad Texas got hosed, personally. Make me laugh and laugh.

by CharlieHog on Dec 3, 2008 9:29 AM CST reply actions

Stephen, maybe the Georgia dome (a tornado did once hit it) will just collapse from an earthquake and knockout both of them! Haha. You being, spared, of course. If forced to choose, I would say Florida, though I think I hate them more, to win. I think they are the stronger SEC team and that would give the SEC a better chance of going three years straight as the National Champ and maybe Tebow will then ascend to Heaven and leave the SEC alone, which ups Arkansas’ chances of beating Florida next year. They aren’t good, but they get better if Tebow is gone. I also live in Big 12 country, so I want an SEC win over the Big 12, especially Satan’s spawn, OU, in the Championship game. One downside of a Florida win is that Houston Nutt can say he has beaten the national champ, if Florida wins it all, two years in a row. But I think it will always be a Houston Nutt thing to beat a national champ ever so often, but never BE a national champ. Isn’t that partly why we got rid of him?

by KevinHog on Dec 3, 2008 9:55 AM CST reply actions

Bear Bryant is from Arkansas, so go with the Tide. Also, a Tide national championship will put them at 13, safely ahead of USC, and we want that record in our conference.

by Jason on Dec 3, 2008 3:25 PM CST reply actions

I don’t think you’ll have to worry about that record staying in the conference Jason. That may be the record for just 1 team, but if you count the conference as a whole, there’s no way the Pac-10 can match up to the SEC.
They might, if you go back a few decades, but in the last 30 years or so, I can’t emagine a conference having more NCs than the SEC.
These are just the ones off the top of my head:

Alabama: ‘78-’79
Georgia: ‘80-’81, I think
Alabama: ‘92-’93
Florida: ‘96-’97
Tenn: ‘98-’99
LSU: ‘03-’04
Florida: ‘06-’07
LSU: ‘07-’08

That’s 8 titals, by 4 different teams, over the last 29 years, and I may have missed 1, but I would be suprised if another conference could even come close to that, and it’s possible another tital could be coming again in ’09.

by GonzoHog on Dec 4, 2008 12:40 PM CST reply actions

Sorry, make that 8 titals by 5 teams in 29 years.

by GonzoHog on Dec 4, 2008 12:44 PM CST reply actions

Pull for Bama because those are the finest titties I’ve ever seen.
