The Auburn Coaching Search Gets Nutty

I don't know about you, but I love me some SEC coaching search drama. Of course, it's a lot less stressful when it's happening to a team you don't really root for, which is probably why I'm so interested by the mess rapidly unfolding at Auburn.

Anyway, the latest name to get churned through the rumor mill is a familiar one. I'll give you a hint: his middle name is Dale and he's not a stranger to the joys of text messaging.

Personally, I don't believe for a second that Nutt will actually wind up at Auburn (this reminds me how every offseason his agent Jimmy Sexton would basically leak the word that HDN was being considered for whatever job happened to be out there), but it sure is fun to think about.

I don’t see Nutt going to Auburn either. He would be trading the in-state rival of Miss. State (Vandy without the smarts) for the new Saban infused Alabama. Whomever Auburn ends up getting, they are going to have to make that person a whole lot of written contractual guarantees to get him to come there.

Surprise Surprise. Sexton is working his magic again.

Source: Nutt to stay at Ole Miss with contract extension

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi is working on a contract extension to keep Houston Nutt amid reports he’s a top candidate at Auburn.

Nutt is working out the extension with athletic director Pete Boone and the new deal will be announced as soon as it is complete, a person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press on Friday on the condition of anonymity. The person asked not to be identified because an announcement hasn’t been made.

Nutt signed a four-year, $7.4 million contract when he took over at Ole Miss last season after resigning at Arkansas.

The Birmingham News reported that Auburn was looking at Nutt to replace Tommy Tuberville.

Nutt told the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal and the Clarion-Ledger of Jackson he has had no contact with Auburn.

Man, I so need an agent like Jimmy Sexton. If I had one I’d be in a duck blind some place, grinning, waiting on my buyout payment.

Auburn has totally screwed itself.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHANUTTHAHAHA!
Them Burners are sure desperate!
Who would fire their moderately successful HC without someone lined up to take his place?
What’s that?
Oh yeah, never mind…

Oh, that Houston Dale. I’m sure that a lot of schools contact him when there’s a coaching vacancy, but I really wonder how high he really is on those lists. Of course, if he does get a contract extension at Ole Miss, it’ll make it that much sweeter when his true colors shine through. After all, they’ve already gotten a taste of classic HDN letdown (Wake Forrest, Vanderbilt, S. Carolina), but a unusually weak year in the SEC West really inflated his wins. The media has done nothing but heap praise on him since he left. If he has a letdown of a season next year, as I expect he will, I wonder who the media will blame.

Update: HDN’s extension is for 1 year only. He really is a used-car salesman. He’ll take whatever he can get.
