A Few Quick Thoughts On Tim Tebow
I'll be the first to admit that I don't like Tim Tebow (or, more accurately, the whole culture around him...it's not like I know the guy). I mean, I have no doubt that he's a fine young man and all, but Florida has always driven me crazy and I'm so over the media's ever-present man crush on him. I'm also not a fan of his style, aesthetically: he looks more like a linebacker than a QB, his left-handed throwing motion bugs me, and I dislike his frequent jump and shovel passes. Most importantly, we all know that he has D-Mac's Heisman sitting on the mantle at home.
But, in the wake of Florida's big win in the tonight's "Championship" Game, I have to say that he is a man. Frankly, he didn't look all that great in the first half, but the way he took over in crunch time was most impressive. He looked like the Road Runner running circles around Wile E. Coyote the way he dodged Oklahoma defenders on the big 3rd & 10 conversion that set up their go-ahead TD when it was tied 7-7, and he pretty much owned the 4th quarter. Like I said...impressive.
But, just when I was starting to soften my longtime anti-Tebow position (only a tiny bit, mind you), the announcers began singing hosannas about his greatness as a human being that included so much hyperventilation it was like a 10 year old girl at a New Kids on the Block Jonas Brothers concert. In about a 15 second stretch they threw out "remarkable", "outstanding", "amazing", "extraordinary" and many other breathless odes to his magnificence, and all the old feelings came flooding right back.
Plus, we all know who should have won that Heisman.

Right on the money on all counts…I don’th think I used any button on my remote more than the mute for the whole second half.

John, I think you summed up my thoughts exactly on Saint Tebow. And to further show his holy status, did you see the “John” and “3:16” on his eye patches? Jesus must be sooooo excited that he got a shout out from THE Tebow. haha. Jesus has always had to rely on that guy with the crazy rainbow afro in the past. I guess we shouldn’t be surprised since Saint Tebow’s parents are missionaries. And their influence no doubt will likely have Tebow back at Florida next year, for their might be a soul not yet saved in the SEC. Spare me!

The OU cornerback was right. He would be the 4th best QB in the Big 12 at best. He will make a good tight end in the NFL unless he wants to play backup. There aren’t many good option attacks left in College football. West Virginia used the spread option. Most spreads use a drop back passer. (Frank had that all confused)
I am never comfortable watching someone wear their religion on their sleeve. More often than not it ends badly but, not always. He may provide an example for some.

Tebow’s a great college football player and a great human being. Sure he gets overhyped, but it’s a little easier to like an overhyped player when he behaves like a Tebow instead of a T.O.
I have no problem with someone wearing his faith on his sleeve (or eye paint) as long as he lives it. And as one who shares Tebow’s faith (and method of schooling, incidentally), I applaud his example.
That being said, he’ll never be a great NFL player, and D-Mac did get robbed.

I have no problems with Tebow. He’s a very good example for all young kids to look up to that want to play big time college football.
He’s not perfect, but he’s closer than most 21 year olds will ever be.
If we want to dislike a player, how about mentioning the guys that play dirty, play without passion, play without any sort of commitment to the team,(or anything else, for that matter) could care less about the fans that support him, or just plain can’t stay out of trouble?
What’s not to like about Tebow?
Because he plays for Florida? Because the media chooses to emphatically promote the man-crush they have for him? Because Houston Nutt was a terrible playcaller, which eventually led to a mediocra season, that included super weak non-conference foes, that left D-Mac excluded from the Hiesman Race?
Come on guys, are those the only reasons?

Tebow doesn’t puff himself. I think the guy would be more happy sharing his faith in a third world country or helping those less fortunate than himself than playing in the NFL. He, unlike most of us (myself included) has a better understanding of what’s really important in life. And for someone his age to have that wisdom is rare, especially in a world of instant gratification and “me, me, me”. While I really hope they have Razorback sports in heaven, somehow I doubt God has an alma mater. I like this site and reading everyone’s comments. It doesn’t have the creal mean spirited postings of some others where people have no life outside the TV and internet. Let’s pick a different topic….like locking Pel to a long term contact. Over and out.

“I think the guy would be more happy sharing his faith in a third world country or helping those less fortunate than himself than playing in the NFL.”
Then by all means let’s see that he does exactly that and sooner rather than later.
“He, unlike most of us (myself included) has a better understanding of what’s really important in life”
Oh please. This kind of crap is why I used the mute function repeatedly during the game. I’ll play along though. Pray tell: just what ‘greater understanding’ does TimTebow possess that most of the rest of us do not?

Hawgfan,
I’m sure a lot of folks understand it just fine, (probably you and me included) but actually showing one’s faith is far more important than just talking or refering it in general.
How many 21 year ex-Hiesman trophy winners and NC winners do you know that SHOWS faith in his God like Tebow does, rather than in himself.
People that have a better understanding of what’s really important, show it.
Ask yourself the question; What’s really more important to me? Doing God’s work or being part of 20,000 crazy Razorback fans, kicking the crap out of OU or Texas?
If your answer is truly the first one, then your beef isn’t with Tim Tebow, it’s with yourself.

“If your answer is truly the first one, then your beef isn’t with Tim Tebow, it’s with yourself.”
I would agree with you here Gonzo. As you’ve written it, I would have a beef with myself if what was most important to me was doing God’s work. I suspect you meant to say ’isn’t’ instead of ‘is’.
To be clear: it’s much more important to me to be “part of 20,000 crazy Razorback fans, kicking the crap out of OU or Texas” or Florida ;^). But then I’m an atheist. So, you can see where ‘doing God’s work’ could take a back seat with me (depending on what that work might be, of course).
“People that have a better understanding of what’s really important, show it.”
Not true. At least not always. I have a much better understanding than you, I think, on what is really important to me in this context: atheism. However, you don’t see me wearing it on my sleeve (you’ve ‘known’ me for quite a while now but I bet you didn’t have the slightest idea on my beliefs). This ‘showing of the faith’ stuff leads to much of what I find unacceptable with religion in general and organized religion in particular but that’s for another day.
Tebow is an excellent football player. He might be an excellent person as well. However, to my mind, we have much less evidence for this than we do the football. I suspect that when Tebow ceases being ‘Good Copy’ we’ll hear much less about him (regardless of his beliefs or ‘greater understanding’).
And for the record: I’m very good with myself these days and God had nothing to do with it.
Gonzo: I like and respect you. Your comments on Razorback sports and issues never fail to interest me and often make me think. I hope we can land on opposite sides of what is usually a very contentious and divisive issue and still enjoy our ‘acquaintance’.

To be fair, all Tebow did was wear a bible verse on his face. He wasn’t praying in the endzone after every touch down or handing out bibles to the opposing defense. You may not have noticed, but several Ohio State players wore bible verses on their faces, too. The point is, no one talks more about God than atheists.

Rubbish Drew. I’ve been on these boards for at least two years and this is the first time I’ve talked about religion. When was the last time your saw Atheists at your door wanting to ‘Spread the Good Word"? I’d wager never. I’ve never had to turn Atheists away myself but I’ve recently (2 months ago) turned Christians from my door. Christians in particular are typically vocal about their faith due to the admonition to convert. Free Thinkers are under no such admonition. Note that I didn’t even bring up the topic, another poster did. I was hoping Tebow’s ‘greater understanding’ was something a little more, ummmm, revelatory, shall we say? ;^)
I really don’t care about your religion, just keep it out of my face. My issue with Tebow is he’s being hyped all out of proportion to what he is: a student athlete. Not someone with ‘greater understanding’ or someone who lives his life better than anyone else. He’s just a great college football player, no more-no less.

I agree with those statements. Satan was a free thinker too.
All anyone has to do is look at the rest of the world around them, to see how well he’s doing.

“Satan was a free thinker too.”
Perhaps, but certainly not an original thinker. ;^)
“All anyone has to do is …”
Need to do better than that Gonzo. Shoot, I bet the Sumerians thought the same thing and for much the same reason. ;^)

Hawgfan, no disrespect was intended in my post, just my own opinion, which I’m entitled to, and which is just as relevant as your’s. Regarding Christians coming to my door, I can honestly say that I’ve never had “Christians” come to my door. Sure, I’ve had Jehovah’s Witnesses (which are not Christians, at least not Judeo-Christians), and I’ve had plenty of people who want to sell me magazines. Oh, and girl scouts. Love those cookies. When I said that “No one talks about God more than atheists”, I was making a sweeping generalization, just as sweeping as some of your generalizations. But, in my own experience, I’ve found it’s somewhat true. Gonzohog’s original post was somewhat enlightening to me, but it’s just his opinion, and is every bit as valid as your’s. It made we wonder why exactly I don’t especially like Tim Tebow, and to be honest, I don’t think I have a good reason other than jealousy. And, to be honest, you may not have brought up God in this thread, but you certainly did continue the conversation with your comments (which I perceive to be rude, but, I’m not entirely sure how well you two know each other). No one put religion in your face. It was just a comment on a public forum, one that you obviously don’t agree with.

We’ve been asked to put the kabosh on this thread, Drew, and I’ve agreed. See you around the playground. ;^)

Tim Tebow is a manipulator and a self serving swarmy guy who thinks his stuff dont stink. He makes me want to puke everytime he opens his mouth. If he was such a great human being what was with the obnoxious Gator Chomp? Im sure one of you religious Jesus nuts will have a suitable answer for that one.I say someone needs to post a GOD IS DEAD or ALLAH RULES sign under their eyes and then we can read of all the good sweet Christians going nuts. Tim Tebow..SHUT UP ALREADY YOU PHONEY BALONEY

It was already put to rest once,(Two days ago in fact) but I guess some folks just can’t resist showing their stupidity.
Thanks Rob, you were very impressive.
