Around SBN: Two Minutes Of Thunder Basketball Wins The Game

Big. Fat. Bummer.

I thought the Hogs played hard. I thought they played pretty well (although they didn't do themselves any favors at the foul line). And Courtney Fortson was downright electric in the game's final minutes.

Alas, it was not enough to avoid a heartbreaking, last-second defeat at the hands of the Volunteers.

Heading into tonight's game, I still had some hope that the Hogs could salvage their conference season enough to snag an NCAA bid. Now that they're sitting at 1-6, I would be thrilled with an NIT bid.

And even that may be a reach. They've dug themselves a mighty big hole.

Box score

* On a non-bummer, note Rivals.com ranks Bobby Petrino's 2009 recruiting class the 14th best in the country. Somewhere, Sean Salisbury is fuming.

I basically agree. They played pretty good. But we just don’t have the length to compete in this league. And this league, by all accounts, isn’t that good. We lost because we couldn’t defend the paint. And because we couldn’t hit free throws. We played hard, but in the end, we weren’t good enough. That may be the epitaph for this season.

But how ‘bout that Petrino? Only team in the top 20 coming off a losing season. It doesn’t take long in the SEC to figure out you have to get talent. (Hint-hint, Pelphrey.)

Length is a good way to put it. Henry looks good, but our backcourt is too tiny. We’re playing three guys under 6-3 most of the game.

I hope Rotnei can get stronger and quicker over the next few years, but he is having a terrible time getting open now. Without transition shots where he’s wide open, he’s simply not getting enough screens or enough open looks to contribute. And he’s ineffective against the perimeter 3-pointer, so he hurts us there.

Recruit, recruit, recruit.

Again, ESPN tried to save me the pain of knowing the score last night and again this morning. Those guys in Bristol are always thinking about me. But like a moth to a flame, I guess, I had to look things up when I got to the office this morning. A really good recruiting class coming in yesterday is salve, somewhat, on this basketball wound.

Somewhere for Salisbury is at least not ESPN. Uggh, how I couldn’t stand that guy!
