Around SBN: Will Rhymes 'Fine' After Being Hit By Pitch And Fainting

The Good News Just Keeps on Coming

It's official: Marcus Monk is no longer a member of the basketball team. Not that this is any big surprise, but it's still a shame. Now the question becomes: Will we have to forfeit the victories in which he played?

(Thanks, by the way, to The Hog Blogger for the heads-up. He gets a free snack out of the office vending machine for a job well done.)

I don’t know what you guys have heard, but the story told to me is three-fold.

1) A donor supposedly gave Monk some sort of gift that made him ineligble before he joined the team. I don’t know if this happened before or after he intended on joining the basketball team, but I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and say before. It WAS before he actually joined the team.

2) The whistleblower was a “former coach.” I don’t know if that means a former coach at Arkansas, a former coach of Monk’s, or a former college basketball coach. Apologies for the uncertainty.

3) (And this is the worst.) OU wants that win back. No word from Texas, but I imagine they’ll let the Sooners handle the dirty work and then follow suit.

Just a guess, but I don’t think any of this will influence the Hogs’ postseason destination.

Ha.

Thanks Hog Blogger for your report. It makes you wonder about the veting that went on before Monk was declared eligible by the UofA. Are we going to learn next that he didn’t pay his taxes? haha. Wouldn’t you think someone would have asked this simple question: “Marcus, has anyone given you anything since you declared for the NFL draft that would be considered a violation of NCAA rules?” If that question wasn’t asked, or if it can be found that our compliance people truly dropped the ball on this, then they really need to be replaced with someone who better understands these byzantine rules of the NCAA. If those questions were asked and Marcus simply didn’t tell the truth, I will be shocked, for it goes against everything we’ve heard about Marcus Monk.

I heard a variant. The “former coach” set Monk up with a car after he completed his football eligibility. No big deal there. Probably no one thought twice.

After Monk came back to UA, the “former coach” wondered aloud to his current school’s basketball coach how Monk could be eligible if he had a car provided by a dealer. Violation was reported.

As for how UA could not have known, well, in the scenario above, I doubt anyone would have thought twice. Except a certain coach who was no longer at UA.

I hope all this can be verified, so the kids being recruited in Arkansas by our pals to the east get to know just how concerned they are about the “kids.”

Quote of the week: “byzantine rules…”

100 cocktails to you, sir.

This announcement comes at a time when Wally is in Indianapolis making a side-story out of questioning the NCAA about the Monk saga. Purely coincidence? I’ll let you guys decide.

Oh what a holy war would erupt if it is found out that Nutt and Ole Miss had something to do with this! Palestinians and Israelis would gather around tv sets in Gaza to watch CNN’s coverage of the war between Fayetteville and Oxford and the turning of the Mississippi river blood red. ;)

You know what really gets to me about this whole thing and whole losing the two national championships in track is that the NCAA seemed to act rather quickly and strictly, while does anyone even know if the NCAA is close to figuring out what to do about the several scandals USC and some of its players (mainly Reggie Bush) were involved in a few years back.

OU, nor Texas will get their loses to the Hogs Nulified.
Rules set up by the NCAA will not nulify a win by any team that did not know of a rules violation by any specific player before clearing that player to compete in those particular games in question.

OU has some pride riding on getting that game back. It’s their only loss. Texas, I’m sure, has more things to worry about with the way they’ve been faltering in the Big XII. Now, I’ll be the first to say that I’m a little unreasonable when it comes to Houston Nutt. Someone keyed my car on Superbowl Sunday, and I’m convinced its him, since that’s just the kind of guy he is. But, God help him if he had anything to do with the Monk situation. Apparently those millions we let him keep when he resigned weren’t enough.

Am I the only one that thinks this is utter Bull S—-?

I am not all-knowledgeable in SEC rules nor am I in University operations, but give me a break! Tell what infraction was the cause. If Monk is to be blamed, let’s get his side of the story! Or at bare minimum an apology by the offender.

It’s caught up in too many legalities right now.
no one at the UofA will even utter a name, even though speculations of who the counterpart may wind up being is down to just a handful of possible guilty candidates.
I guess we’ll just sit here in the dark, while some nitwit on the inside of the issue writes a book about
it.
The only thing we know for certain, was that Monk definately became ineligible sometime before he was cleared to play basketball for the UofA.
I don’t believe for a second that Monk willingly and knowingly did something that he knew was wrong, that would make him ineligible to join the UofA basketball team, but I do believe someone else knew this would happen if the situation arose.
I wonder who could have gotten that little rumor starting?
