The Meteor Should Be Crashing Into Earth Any Second Now ...

This morning has produced that rarest of events: a Wally Hall column that contains something other than unintentional comedy and incomprehensible passages. Today, the Ol' Greybeard sheds some light on the Marcus Monk situation, which until now has been guarded with a level of secrecy that would set Dick Cheney's decrepit heart a-flutter.

From the column:

"Maybe if Marcus Monk hadn't been forced to borrow some money to pay his bills - from a guy he's known since he was 10 years old - the Arkansas Razorbacks could have beaten Kentucky.

Because Monk had a long, prior relationship with the friend, it never occurred to him someone might object, but after a bank employee called the University of Arkansas to report Monk and the check, everyone - including Monk - was all out to clear up the situation.

Since the UA has had three NCAA investigations in 10 years, it decided to take the high road rather than fight, even though if an athlete has a relationship with someone before the age of 15 the friendship is considered to not be based on athletics.

Monk and his friend's relationship started a decade before the friend served as a graduate assistant for Stan Heath."

I hope that wasn’t one of the banks that received a Federal bailout.

It really doesn’t seem like there’s anyone to blame for this happening. Very unfortunate situation.
It looks like both Monk and the UofA put themselves between a rock and a hard place. Things happen that way sometimes.
I wish Marcus the best. Those 2 wins he helped us with over OU and Texas were great. Thanks, Marcus.

Marcus, if by chance you are reading this. Thanks for all that you’ve done for Razorback sports. I hope you find an NFL team soon and have a good career in the pros, but know too that there are probably a good number of employers in Arkansas that would love to have you, not just because you played for the Hogs, but also because you know the importance of team. Good luck to you!

Before you go to praising Wally, this column is indicative of a disturbing Wally trend that really, really hacks me off. To be honest, if I was his editor, I would fire him for this. He did this back during the Dana Altman fiasco and I nearly blew my carotid artery, and really would have fired him then, when he also broke a “story” on talk radio.

Look, if he has the actual story on Marcus Monk, then it is a news story and should be reported as such, with, you know, sources. And quotes. And names. If he is going to implicate a former Heath assistant, then have the cojones to name him. Ask him for a quote.

But if you can’t confirm the story, through sources willing to be quoted, then YOU DON’T HAVE A STORY and you should shut your fur-rimmed pie-hole!

A blogger can run all the unconfirmed rumors he wants. But the sports editor of the state-wide daily newspaper doesn’t get that luxury, no matter how many radio talk shows he hosts. There is a standard here that is important. If Wally knows what he wrote to be true, then he has an obligation to do the reporting to be able to write that story. If he is too lazy to do that, or assign someone to do that, then he has to remain quiet.

Rant concluded.

On a different and a lot more exciting news, both of the main ESPN channels are broadcasting events from the UA Campus (at least in this area). On ESPN2 I am currently watching the women’s gymnastics take on Alabama, and on ESPN they’re showing the Tyson Invitational.

Kind of cool to watch Razorback team/facilities on both channels.

J. Hawg,

Valid points.

But if he were good at what he did, he would no longer be Wally Hall.

And then what would we do?

J Hawg,

Good points. Knowing Wally, this isn’t the real story.

I would say the lack of corroboration by any other reputable news outlet (including his own sports desk) is fairly deafening.

J Hawg,

What “story” did Wally break during the Altman saga?

by Stephen on Feb 16, 2009 6:07 PM CST reply actions

Well, my memory is that when everyone was trying desperately to figure out why Dana did a one-eighty, Wally wrote a column implying that there were drug problems on the team. Might have been, but it was the implying that galled me.

I’m with you, J.Hawg.
I’ve occasionally wondered out loud why Wally hasn’t had his pants sued off for some of the implications he makes toward people.
We can only hope the rumor about Monk is accurate, but I also agree that if Wally’s going to run his mouth and orcistrate what seems to be something resembling only a partial story, then he needs to man up and come on out with the rest of it, and be specific.
Sadly, this is the trend of most journalism in this day and age. Freedom of the press is way out of hand, and when you have a state centerpiece of sorts trying to control our thoughts, and what we percieve as the truth about sports topics we all have a great interest in, this is what we usually end up with.

Wally’s been around a long time, maybe too long.
