The Plot Thickens ...

Well, it looks like the Ol' Greybeard's unsourced report on why Marcus Monk is no longer eligible may have been close to right. From a Harry King article in today's Morning News:

"Money that a long-time friend loaned Marcus Monk to help with college expenses came from a third party a source confirmed, a dynamic that made it impossible for the athletic department to argue that Monk should be eligible to play one semester of basketball.

If, indeed, the money had been strictly friend-to-friend, the UA would have vigorously defended Monk's status. Even if the source of the money was a well-meaning person trying to help an exemplary student-athlete pursue an advanced degree, the situation was indefensible. Imagine trying to convince the NCAA that it is OK for a person to pass money to an athlete just because the go-between happens to be a friend."

You should definitely check out the full article.

Wow. If only the SEC (Securities Exchange Commission) were as feared as the NCAA, this country might not be in such an economic crisis! But, yeah, I understand what the UofA had to do in not letting Monk come back. The third party being involved put the UofA in a bad spot.

Seems like the former graduate assistant would have known about this special fund too. So why didn’t he point Monk in that direction? If Monk knew the rule that allows someone to loan you money if you’ve known them for a long period of time, then it looks like he would have known about the existence of this fund. Why take a violation risk when there exists something by the books that can help you out?

I hope that the fact that the UofA acted as soon as they got wind of this has some sway in us keeping our victories over Texas and OU. But I can’t say there is a good track record of the NCAA being all that forgiving of the Hogs.

Finally, it might be this losing basketball season talking, but it just seems like things have a tendency to always end on a bad note up there on The Hill. The remarkable thing about ’94 is that something involving UofA athletics had a good ending. But then even that had to have a sour note with the way Richardson went out.

At least Harry King was a little more specific on the details of the story, compared to Wally Hall just throwing out a little bait to reel in the state rumor-mill again.

Thanks, Harry.

Well, Harry King is actually a journalist . . .

When the rumor started that a “former coach” was the responsible, some people (myself included) automatically assumed it was HDN. It kinda seems sad now to assume that, because it means we forgot that Stan Heath (and his damn whole staff) are also “former”. Hopefully, there will come a day when Houston Nutt is an afterthought. Hopefully sooner than later. All this dwelling on the past can’t be good for the digestion.
