All Bad Things Must Come To An End
And thankfully, this mind-numbing regular season (or, to be exact, this mind-numbing conference season) is over.
Maybe it's because my precious circadian rhythm had been thrown off by the time change, but I felt kind of cranky watching today's game. I didn't have it in me to conduct my usual search for the silver lining in yet another dark cloud.
It really struck me today just how weak this team is. I know that may sound crazy considering the Hogs finished 2-14 in SEC play, but de Nile ain't just a river in Egypt.
They don't do anything well (I'm guessing that's the case with most last-place teams). They have no identity, no personality. Their offense rarely has any type of flow or rhythm, and the defense offers all the resistance of a matador.
I've walked away from many of this season's losses thinking that the Razorbacks are closer to respectability than it would appear. I can't say that I feel that way right now.
Thoughts?

I didn’t watch the game…did Fortson really take 27 shots?? That just seems all wrong.

Guys, I was hoping to throw some good news on the pile and write a little post about how the Razorback softball team defeated the Cowboys. But despite a thrilling grand slam that tied the game, the Hogs lost it in the last inning to fall 6-7 here in Stillwater. It was nice seeing some fella Hog fans and doing the Hog call with them. As bad as things are for the basketball Hogs, Hog fans are still Hog fans, and it is nice meeting them when you are an expat, as I am sure you guys can attest to as well. Even though the softball team lost, I am much happier that I was outside on a beautiful day watching them instead of inside following this deadman walking of a basketball team.
What do you say? One and done in Tampa? That’s about what I expect.

Well.
I have to start by giving props to the Expats. Anymore, it’s difficult for me to even come up with a few words for a comment. But the Expats keep cranking out the posts, despite the dismality of the season, and I think I speak for everyone when I say it’s much appreciated.
I’ll be watching Thursday, and I’ll be pulling for my Hogs to somehow make a miracle run thru the SECT, but I must succumb to reality and say that not even a miracle will be good enough. Not to mention we draw the de facto home team in the first round. How about bringing the SECT back to Memphis for a change? I hear they have a new arena and everything. Supposed to be pretty nice, too.

Welcome back to reality. Fans always want to believe the best, that there is hope right around the corner.
I really want to be wrong about Pelphry and Clark. I want everyone to be wrong about Fortson. We are pretty much stuck with this mess for at least another year no matter who is wrong.
These are tough, gritty little guys. What we need is a couple of warriors, preferably one great big one inside and a full bench of long and fast. Do we even get to 13 scholarships this year??

Perhaps a more serious, yet hilarious note, this might be my favorite link of 2009 so far.

That was absolutely the most boring basketball season I have ever witnessed. I started watching when Van Eman coached and we had guys like Dean Tolson and Martin Terry who would have been the best two players by far on this year’s team, and were certainly more fun to see.
But what is most portentous is the sad sack vision of this absolutely uneventful recruiting class. At least under Heath we could imagine Al Jefferson playing or Famutimi leading the SEC in scoring, even for only a year.
Now, the most excitement we have is when the 7-foot kid Borden breaks double figures in scoring.
How we will ever get back to a national contender at this rate is incomprehensible.

John says all of the right things. I’m not sure he is listening to himself. Long likes to talk about the Hog ‘brand’.
Well, Arkansas basketball is 40 minutes of hell, pressure defense is your offense. Pelphry said he wanted a 94 foot game, and Lord knows you can’t do that with 8 players.
Skip all of the extra steps and another 5 years lost and bring back Mike Anderson. We are not going to right this ship with on the job training. Arkansas Basketball is too big to have to put up with that. We all know it. It was bungled by Frank and White. Politely, with class, and a few extra bucks, lets skip the denial and move on.
