Yawn - Another Suspension
Per a little known federal statute, at least one Razorback basketball player must be suspended from the team at any given time. To keep the feds from knocking down his office door, John Pelphrey has - once again - suspended Jason Henry indefinitely.
I don't know if Pelphrey is overly eager to discipline guys or if his players are truly this slack, but the number of suspensions during the coach's two-year tenure has become grimly amusing. We lost count around 5,000.
On a serious note, given Pelphrey's comments about Henry throughout the season and the fact that this is no less than Jason's THIRD suspension this year, color me skeptical that Henry will return to Fayetteville next fall.

As Henry was the only 2008 recruit with any athleticism at all, that puts even more pressure on this year’s recruiting.
Does anyone know the maximum amount of players Pelphrey can sign this year?
Can we, for instance, just recruit the entirety of whatever Juco team wins the national championship? Swap teams with UALR under a little-used intra-UA System rule?
I’m looking for a little help, here.

Speaking of UALR, I was really disappointed with their performance in the Sun Belt Tournament, especially since the games were in Hot Springs. I had moderately high hopes that Arkansas would at least have one team in the NCAA.
Perhaps the players were out too late riding the Yellow Ducks the night before.

Pelphrey’s mistake was he didn’t recruit and sign, John Henry, the steel driving man. Haha. Much better work ethic, I am sure!

Nothing surprises me at this point. I suppose Pelphrey is attempting to stick to his guns, and, on some level, you have to respect that. However, he also has to recruit players who are proper fits with HIS system. For a coach who intends to have a “my way or the highway” system, Pelprhey is going to have to be good at effectively matching the talent AND disposition of his incoming players/recruits. Otherwise, I suspect we’re going to be stuck with the weekly suspension game for his tenure. Whether right or wrong, at some point (and for an expanding minority of fans, that point is already here), the fans will begin to blame the Coach. He needs time, but suspensions should be an extraordinary measure at some point.

It’s my understanding that Henry is suspended for cutting class. Cutting class isn’t the biggest indicator of poor character, but you have to respect Pelphrey for placing a high emphasis on education. Also, Henry’s offense doesn’t reflect poorly on Pelphrey’s recruiting efforts. It’s not like he’s doing drugs or using brass knuckles on a guy at a McDonalds (I’m looking at you, Ole Miss).

Apparently the “hot rumor” is that Henry, Ryan Powers (http://tinyurl.com/b6cdqe) and Fortson were all arrested by UAPD for shoplifting.
Powers actually got booked, Henry got an in-house suspension, and Fortson got off free.
Sounds a bit far-fetched, but I would appreciate it if someone not named Wally Hall would at least start asking questions and connecting dots.
The fun thing about police is that their records are, you know, public. Especially if they work for an institution that’s, you know…public.

HB,
From the article that I linked to in the post above:
“A check of area law enforcement agencies Tuesday did not reveal any arrest or incident reports on Henry, and Pelphrey did not specify what led to his decision.”

Quote of the week: “Perhaps the players were out too late riding the Yellow Ducks the night before.”
100 cocktails to you, sir.
The Sun Belt Tourney was a nice get for Hot Springs, but man, that arena is a Cracker Jack box. I suppose it doesn’t really matter when the average session attendance is 250… or slightly above the average session attendance at the SEC Women’s Tournament.

Henry and Fortson weren’t booked, though. Everybody knows somebody who knows somebody who knows somebody.
The police are just where you start.
I hope someone is tracing that chain, and figuring out how bad these “in-house issues” are with Pelphrey.
As we’re all aware, Arkansas media let Nutt get away with a ton behind the scenes and never reported on any of it until they had to. Hopefully that’s not what’s happening here, because this sounds like stuff that’s a lot more serious than crappy shoulder pads, cleats, and a parents’ meeting.

I am in Pelphrey’s corner on this. He is setting the tone, not only for this team, but for all the kids(emphasis on KIDS) that he recruits in the future. I think he is building on this principal, and showing that he means business. (My dad was the same way!) He is recruiting student athletes, and the student part is first!
That was always one of my complaints with Nolan. He trained players for the NBA, which was great for some, but the others that got no degree were just work horses for the U of A, and to heck with them when their time was up. Pelphrey is looking to give them an education, too. My guess is that he says suspended “indefinitely” so that the player will have to earn his time back.
Now, if there is more to the story than missing class, then….. But, at least Pelphrey isn’t letting it slide as some coaches have. And, by law, he can’t divulge the offense. But, we are all curious.
