Done Deal: The Dribble Drive is Coming to Lexington
Perhaps the state of Kentucky and the city of Memphis can begin the process of recovering from their collective nervous breakdowns. It's now official: John Calipari is the new head coach of the Kentucky Wildcats.
What are your thoughts? Personally, I think Kentucky is on the verge of a seriously great run. Makes me kind of jealous, actually. Oh well, perhaps they'll find themselves in hot water with the NCAA at some point (the marriage of Calipari and Kentucky does seem to be a recipe for the recruiting scandal to end all recruiting scandals).
One final note: a friend of the Expats who is a serious Memphis fan is also a Facebook "friend" of John Calipari. He just forwarded me some of the more amusing comments that Tiger fans are leaving on the coach's page. This may surprise you, but they don't appear to be handling it too well.
Here's my favorite comment so far, penned by the learned and erudite Facebook user Billy Howerton : "FU CAL, SUCK MY WHITE ASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Yes, I think Calipari can make Kentucky a great power again. I have mixed emotions about that. Jealous, sure. But I think when Kentucky is great, the SEC is better; and when they are not so good, the entire conference is dragged down.
And here is what I spent yesterday thinking about: When Pelphrey (or whomever it eventually is that gets this done) pulls together our scrappy, intense, hard-nosed, defense-first squad of players not quite good enough to be recruited by Carolina-Duke-Kansas-Kentucky, and takes them into Rupp and outplays and outsmarts a Calipari team loaded up with prima donna one-and-done talent . . . when that happens, and it will happen . . . well, all will be right, the Razorback Ethos will be restored, and we will savor the sweetness in a way no Kentucky fan can ever savor sweetness.

I must say the feeling over here in the bluff city is one of disbelief and exhaustion. I Think its hilarous here to listen to the fans and there whining and crying over Cal. They seem to forget that before Cal was here they were a third tier team with Tic Price and Johnny Jones as coach. They think they are going to get a big name coach and can’t stop looking thru their blue tinted glasses to see what they really are; a UNC-Charlotte, or Univ. of New Orleans type program. This will decemate there team for years to come. I think I am enjoying this only because I am so tired of listening to Tiger Fans who only come out of the woodwork when they are winning. Did they honestly think Cal would be here forever? I just enjoy it because I told them for years that Cal was a snake in the grass and would move on when the grass became greener. He did some shady recruiting over here and the memphis fans will be the first to tell you, so its only a matter of time before KY goes on probation. I think it will make the SEC stronger and put Memphis back where they belong- a mid major program.
P.S.- I probably wouldn’t feel this stongly against memphis if I didn’t live here and have to listen to there fans all the time talk about how great Memphis basketball is and was. Just some venting.

I was just thinking that some realtor in Lexington is going to be very happy to see the new coach and his wife. Hell, they might even give coffee to closers and non-closers on that day at the office. haha.

J Hawg – great description. You pretty much summed it all up right there.
Hog Fan – maybe the Hogs should avoid scheduling Memphis, seeing as how they’re now a regional program and all.
KevinHog – another quality cultural reference…thanks!

Thanks, John. A job writing for the Simpsons or writing questions for Jeopardy are two places where I think I could be of most use to the world. But, alas. Still, I am proud to be associated with a sports blog that understands the cultural significance of David Mamet. You know, not all of them do! haha.

I just wonder if when J.Hawg’s day comes if some scribe will ask Calipari if he would still say that Arkansas isn’t “a national program” like he said a few years back. Also, my brother is a huge UK fan and for my sake I hope said day comes sooner rather than later.

As a Hogfan it pains me to say this, but Calipari and Donovan will out recruit the entire league resulting in a race for third place for the rest of the league. However, from the league’s perspective these two “national programs” will benefit the league tremendously, and WHEN the Razorbacks return to become a consistent winner, we are in for some good basketball with the Razorbacks in the middle of it. And thankfully we only have to play each of those teams once a year. I can’t wait for a renewed ARK-KENT rivalry!
