Crystal Ball Time: How Long Will Bobby Stay?

Ah, the deep offseason...a time when reporters and bloggers alike turn to that tried & true method of filling space: ranking the SEC coaches. Although SEC fans have always obsessed over football coaches, the trend has jumped to a new level in the last few years, as multiple coaches won national titles and the conference got an infusion of new talent (ex. Bobby Petrino) while losing some of the dead weight (ex. Ed Orgeron). Just Google "SEC coach rankings" to see what we're talking about.

Anyway, the Auburn blog Track 'Em Tigers has devised a novel way of ranking the coaches: by estimating the probability that they'll still be at their school five years from now. If you're like me, you probably read that and braced yourself for a barrage of bad "Petrino will leave at halftime" jokes. But, the big shocker is that they actually rated Petrino the most likely to still be around in five years (don't worry...there are plenty of jokes in the comments section, though).

According to their rankings, there's only one other coach as likely as Petrino to still be around in half a decade. Who is it? We'll let that be a surprise...read the full post to find out.

Poor Bobby. He will be the coach that non-Arkansas media and fans love to hate for a couple of more years now. It is a convenient way to take a shot at ARkansas as well. It looks like it works for us but it will change very quickly with a division or conference championship. The stories of his redemption will be legion. ADs around the country will have to wait long enough for Bobby to look stable, at least another 2 or 3 years but, he is a hot commodity, make no mistake. All you have to do is look at last years new hires in the SEC and see that there is little new talent currently waiting in the wings. I just hope Long is ready to restructure the contract when the time comes.

Funny that this came from Auburn. How Chizik got out of Iowa ahead of the posse boggles the mind. If you needed any more proof how disfunctional Auburn is just wait. It is coming in spades. I wish Gus well but, after seeing his stuff at Tulsa, I do have to wonder if it will not need a pretty big fine tuning to work in the SEC. Kiffin seems the most in over his head and Tennessee has lost a lot of the swagger from the Manning/Martin days. Both of those programs are in for some time in the wilderness. Miles is where Nutt is going to be in a couple of years. If he doesn’t win the division in the next two years he will be in trouble.

Florida was the class of the league last year and kept the national media from looking under the hood. The SEC is a bit short on QB talent right now. It could get a little ugly.

I offer below my own email skirmish with a blogger over at collegefootballnews.com whose ranking of SEC coaches didn’t make a lot of sense to me. No response from him as of yet. I am sure the logic of my argument has him stunned into silence, haha.

Barrett,

Just like everybody has an asshole, everybody in the South has an opinion about where you rank SEC coaches. So it goes. But I think some rankings are more accurate than others. And there are elements in your ranking that just don’t make much factual sense when you consider win / loss records and championships.
Number one, Houston Nutt can coach a good game, but he is not number three in the SEC. I am a Razorback fan who watched him for ten years, and during those ten years I am sure I looked at what Richt was doing at Georgia with much ENVY compared to what Nutt was doing here. How many times did Nutt beat Richt? ZERO. How many SEC titles did Richt win? Two, I believe. How many has Nutt won? NONE. And I don’t want to hear the talent argument. Nutt had two of the best backs in the SEC for three years and couldn’t win a championship with them or even a bowl game. He’s a good coach, just not a championship caliber coach, and I think Ole Miss is going to find that out over time. And ahead of Spurrier and Miles as well? Come on. Those guys have both won it all in the SEC and on the national level. Nutt, a good coach when nobody is looking, a good rah, rah, guy, but not deserving the number three spot in my opinion.
Number two, enough with the Petrino might leave at any moment dead horse. Please try to find something more original to say. I think it is hard for the sports media to believe that a championship winning coach might actually like coaching at Arkansas. It isn’t the dark side of the moon. Geez. Finally, don’t forget who had coached all these years the qb that Petrino had last year. Casey Dick was a Nutt product. You are right, Ryan Mallet should be a major upgrade. And he wouldn’t be here if Nutt were still here.

Okay, I’ve said my piece. My asshole and I will sign off.

Kevin
