More Offseason Fun for the Basketball Team

Over the weekend, the bombshell news broke that a Razorback athlete might not have been as rigorously devoted to his academic pursuits as we've led to believe: former bball star Patrick Beverley explained that his suspension (and subsequent banishment to the Ukraine) was the result of him being caught turning in schoolwork that had been done by someone else.

The interesting twist is that some of his teammates apparently also took advantage of the same helpful service. Of course, whoever was actually doing the work couldn't have been all that bright because nobody from that team actually graduated. Come on guys, where's your commitment to APR scores??

And in other basketball news, the team upheaval bug has claimed its latest victim: Stephen Cox. Our staff of walk-on historians is poring over the data now and will be issuing a 75 page report on what it all means very soon.

Imagine that! Athletes being given things just to keep them eligible to play; Sadly our love of intercollegiate athletics seems to make us forget two things first these athletes are human beings not resources to be used and cast aside and second the point of the intercollegiate athletic programs is supposed to be to provide an opportunity for talented athletes to get an education first and then to provide that school and their alumni and supporters something to cheer about. While Mr. Beverly and his team mates will be castigated and belittled for their actions; where is the uproar over those who provided them with the ways and means to cheat their way through the system? A rotten fish stinks all the way to the head. Perhaps the U of A athletic department could clean up its act and start a trend in college athletics remembering that we are to be about producing well educated, clear thinking, articulate productive members of our society. Trophies, titles and records do not make people champions. The content of their character, the ability to strive for excellence in all areas of one’s life and being someone who can contribute to our society as a servant leader is what makes CHAMPIONS.

Huge fan of that video. I’m not sure what to think, though.

Considering he’s about to try and play in the NBA, taking the fall for his teammates almost makes him seem heroic/sympathetic.

Supposedly the APR is way up now, though, after Washington came back and they picked up a transfer whose name escapes me.

I don’t know if I would call that heroic/sympathetic. It’s not like he wasn’t cheating and took the fall for his buddies. He’s the only one who got caught and committed a sin of omission by not incriminating others. Although, I’m not sure if I even believe him. Sounds like he’s trying to save face. At least he had nice things to say about his time in Fayetteville.

Just got off the Whole hog website. The first page looks like a the “Police Report” in the local memphis paper. Askew arrested on theft, Britt with a DWI and Beverly caught cheating. At least we have the Diamond Hogs to cheer about and congrats on making it to the Super Regionals. Now we face a florida st. team that scored 61 runs in 3 games in their regional. They won their last game 37-6. Heres to the bright spot in Arkansas athletics!! Go diamond hogs!!

p.s.- Also would like to congratulate the Razorback golf team on their NCAA championship runner up.

Now Ryan Mallet breaks his finger! Any news coming out of the UofA at this time of year, likely bad. I join Hog Fan in Memphis in congratulating two good news stories that have bucked the DWI, cheating, theft, accident trend of late – the Golf team going so far and coming so close to a title and our baseball Hogs who beat the paperclips to win a regional and now are just two wins away from the College World Series.
