Thinking About Florida: One Unpleasant Memory, One Pleasant Pipe Dream

If you're like me, the thought of Arkansas vs Florida conjures up the memory of one specific game and one very, very unpleasant play in particular.

(And if, after reading the above sentence, you're not thinking of the 2006 SEC championship game and Reggie Fish's infamous fumbled punt then you're a very lucky person.)

Just to come out and say it, that game sucked. Royally. After falling behind 17-0, the Hogs stormed back to take the momentum and the lead until, late in the 3rd quarter, poor Reggie Fish fumbled a punt in the end zone. To his credit, Fish was a very classy, stand-up guy about it and the Razorbacks certainly had more chances after that play. But man, that was the worst...one of the lowest moments in my long personal history as an Arkansas fan.

So, as part of the slow, painful healing process I needed to get that off my chest before this weekend's Florida game (apologies for any mental trauma it may have caused you). But then I remembered that Fish is still on the team and that got me thinking...

Star-divide

One of my favorite things about sports is that the games occasionally offer opportunities for redemption that rarely happen in real life...think of Clint Stoerner's pass to Anthony Lucas to beat Tennessee in 1999, or even Casey Dick ending his Razorback career with that heroic drive and last-second TD against LSU. Even though nothing fully makes up for earlier heartbreaks, I'm a sucker for that stuff.

I fully admit that the following scenario is about as likely as Wally Hall winning the Pulitzer Prize (cheap shot alert!), but it's fun to dream about. Imagine this:

It's late in the 4th quarter against Florida and, somehow, the Hogs have miraculously managed to scratch and claw their way into a close game. The Gators' offense has made a few big plays, but has been slightly out-of-sync the whole time, and has committed a couple of turnovers that we were able to capitalize on. The Hogs' offense has been largely stymied by the ferocious Florida D, but has gutted out a few drives to keep things from getting out of hand.

To sum up, it's been one of those games where we never really had momentum and things have always been a bit out of reach, yet with less than a minute left we find ourselves down only 21-17 and ready to receive a punt after a huge 3rd down stop by our defense. For some reason (my crystal ball gets cloudy here), the littlest Razorback - Mr. Reggie Fish - takes the field around the Arkansas 30 yard line as part of the return team. The ball is kicked his way...he makes the catch (Hog fans everywhere breathe a sigh of relief), dodges the first defender, then the second, then the third and suddenly sees daylight up the left sideline. He kicks his legs into a new gear and...

… beer and nacho chips spray all over my living room as I loose any semblance of control or impartiality in, not so mush cheering but, willing Reggie to dodge the punter, who is the last line of defense. The attempt to push him out of bounds is going to be feeble, but the punter has the angle and Reggie has outrun any remaining blockers. Reggie reaches out a hand to stiff-arm his pursuer as…

a flag is thrown around the 40 yard line for a block in the back way far away from the play.
Wow, sorry, I’m usually an optimist, but something like that would figure. A penalty that has no real bearing on the play would doom us.
Incidentally, I had my own optimistic moment while I was not paying attention in class. I envision a win on a Tim Tebow fumble at the Gators 7, with Jake Bequette smothering the ball in the endzone after Tebow’s original attempt to recover squirts away from him.

dude!

As we say here in California, you’re really harshing my mellow with that one.

sweet!

NOT.
That could have been a really fun little chain story. DXF04 – you just ruined my day.

Suddenly I don't feel welcome here anymore...

What do you want from me? I apologized. Besides, it didn’t really ruin the chain story; I just made it a bit more realistic. It just requires a quick touchdown drive, instead of Reggie’s Redemption.

No unwelcomeness intended!

I just couldn’t resist putting that “sweet” in the title line. Let’s face it, we’re all praying that the Hogs will play a respectable game tomorrow and that we don’t get shown up by a team that most agree is a juggernaut on their off days. We’re having to get in our good feelings now because we feel the potential for doom and have sown just that all too often over the years. Hell, I started predicting an implosion somewhere in the third quarter of the Auburn game because I’m so used to disappointment!

So please forgive our notice of even the slightest bit of pessimism – we just don’t want to jinx the thing, you know?

No worries

The “unwelcome” thing was tongue in cheek. For what it’s worth, I really did feel bad after posting. Had there been a way to delete my post, I likely would have. Saying we’ll win (and I’ll never say otherwise) is, to put it lightly, optimistic, but I’m an realist in that I know we have the ability to hang with and even beat Florida, provided we execute. I, too, have put up with the dissappointment, and there’s nothing I hate worse than eating my words (the last basketball season was especially difficult). My dash of realism is hopefully a bit of reverse psychology on the gods of football.

Sorry

I really feel bad for being a buzzkill now. Here’s hoping for some reverse-psychology good vibes.

the Hogs

end up beating Florida for the first time since joining the SEC, thanks to Reggie Redemption Fish, but this does nothing from stopping Florida from going on to win the SEC title and then the national title. And Arkansas, Florida’s Ole Miss for 2009, is still without an SEC title that it came sooo close to earning back in 2006, the closest it has ever come to taking home that particular trophy. Simply put, Arkansas as a program just needs to get better at doing heroic deeds in the post season. Regular season wins are great, and I love them, and I will be so happy if we win Saturday, but I want to be able to point to some non boot shapied trophies for a change, damn it! haha.
