Group Therapy: Bowl-Game Memories

group_therapy-3

So, for the first time in the Bobby Petrino era, the Hogs are bowl eligible. Arkansas fans are pumped and are having a grand 'ole time speculating about where the Razorbacks may end up.

However, I think as fans we need to review the Hogs' history in these games and ask ourselves: Do we really want this? Can our mental health survive more ass-kickings and embarrassing efforts?

I kid, of course. I am as excited as anyone, and I think we will fare better in these games under Petrino than we have in the past. But there's no denying the fact that the postseason has been extremely unkind to the Hogs over the years. Arkansas has a 11-22-3 record in bowl games. In their past 16 appearances, they are a mighty 3-13.

So before we go marching bravely into what will hopefully be a new era, let's wash ourselves of the past by indulging in a little group therapy. What is your most painful Arkansas bowl-game memory? If you feel like crying, don't fight it. You're among friends. Besides, we understand - we've watched these games too. And just so the post isn't too much of a downer, let us know your favorite memory as well.

I'll start things off with my least favorite memory: the 17-3 loss to UCLA in the 1989 Cotton Bowl, in which the Hogs gained a whopping four first downs and 42 yards of total offense. My favorite would definitely be the 2000 Cotton Bowl win over Texas (I was all of five when Arkansas beat No. 1 Oklahoma in the 1978 Orange Bowl and don't remember the game).

Ahh ... I feel better already. Your turn.

2006/7 Capital One Bowl vs Wisconsin

That game epitomized the malaise of that period. The Hogs clearly outplayed Wisconsin (our defense dominated them in the 2nd half), yet somehow we didn’t win.

So many to choose from!

Out of the bowl losses that I have attended, I would have to say that the Music City bowl was the worse. I made the mistake of buying those tickets for my mother and brother as Christmas presents. Don’t ever buy Hog bowl tickets as Christmas presents! That game was so disappointing because we started out like we were on fire with the first drive and then didn’t do squat the rest of the game! And it was cold!

Of the ones I just saw on television, I think the Capital One stands out over the recent Cotton Bowl. With that Missouri Cotton Bowl, at least you knew a new coach was about to take over. After the Capital One bowl, you knew Nutt would be back in the fall.

The best bowl that I experienced either on tv or in person was the 2000 Cotton Bowl win over Texas (spit!). Like Ole Miss fans on January 1st 2009, I thought that it was only going to get better from here on out – hahaha. Those years did have some good moments, but SEC Championship, National Championship good like I was imagining that day.

agree - bowl tickets make bad christmas presents

Music City Bowl against Minnesota was a total bust. I bought tickets for my parents and two brothers as a Christmas present. It was cold, the NFL stadium lacked any kind of gameday atmosphere and our team played like a bunch of sissies. The only good memory was turning around to see that the lunatic Hog fan that security was dragging away was my brother’s childhood friend. We still laugh about that.

2008 Cotton Bowl

Watching Tony Temple pick up Cotton Bowl rushing records, instead of DMac and Felix, was just embarrassing.

worst ever bowl

I’m going way back to the 66 Cotton Bowl, when our all-SWC qb tore his shoulder up and still played but we couldn’t score and LSU broke our 22 game win streak and beat us 14-7.

Had we won that game we would have been undisputed national champs, and probably reached a 30 game win streak. The next season we lost – if memory serves – to Baylor and then in the last game to Texas Tech and finished 8-2.

That one really hurt, because Brittenum couldn’t throw at all and he was a helluva passer for the mid 60s.

The bowls really don’t mean anything anymore, just a fun game to watch but nothing really riding on them as far as rankings, unless you’re in the BCS. In the 60s the bowls were everything.

Best / Worst

I too was at the 2000 Cotton Bowl with a large gaggle of friends. The game itself was wonderful – the downside, which also made it the worst in some ways, was waking up at such an ungodly hour after participating quite fully in all of the New-Year’s festivities in Dallas. As I remember, the game was scheduled for something like 10am (11am eastern) in order to be the “1st bowl game of the new millennium”. I had to drive, had just finished becoming sober enough to drive like, 8 people, over an hour to the game in a rusty ‘78 nova (college kids!). We’d heard of the nightmares of parking around the cotton bowl, but had left early enough (dear god – how early!) for it not to be a problem. Then we crammed ourselves into the upper-deck seating , the rows were close together, in the middle of a sea of burnt orange. I felt like I was turning an actual shade of green. Then, a generous UT fan gave me a couple of tums and a handful of advil, plus a beer to wash it all down with. Life improved greatly! Next thing I knew, Houston Nutt was infamously driving the Hook-em Horns into the ground and the game went wonderfully. The UT fans were gracious and generous in helping a bunch of broke college kids buy a few beers despite the defeat and we returned the favor by teaching them to sing the Arkansas fight song in three-part harmony. A great day all around!

My worst was the 2007 capital One bowl as well. I was trapped in Rhode Island at a family function amongst the group of family members I truly do not enjoy (most of ‘em are great, these are a bunch of racist/sexist pigs who make Glen Beck look like ralph nader. I’d never give the time of day to if I wasn’t related to them). I retreated to the tiny basement of my grandparent’s house with a second cousin who felt the same as me, a few scrounged beers, and a 13" TV that was missing the green portion of the RGB spectrum. And then to lose that way – insult to injury.

1966 Cotton Bowl

I was a 16 year-old in Libya——Dad was an oilman. There was this obnoxious LSU kid over there who actually thought that a 7-3 LSU team could beat the Hogs, who had been on Sports Illustrated as “The New Dynasty”. When they did beat us I thought they must have paid off the refs or whatever corrupt thing those Cajuns do to win important games.

Then, on 2 January 1978 God allowed me to be at the Orange Bowl on my way to South America on business. The super-obnoxious OU lady in the bar at my hotel was no where to be found AFTER the game. She promised she would face me down when she was giving me hell BEFORE the game.

Worst 1966 Cotton Bowl -- Best 1965 Cotton Bowl/1978 Orange Bowl

I was a freshman at Southwestern/Rhodes in 1966 and lost over $100 (and ate a lot of crow) betting classmates on that game. If Brittenum had not gotten hurt, I think we would have won easily.

1965 Cotton Bowl was great because I was there and we won the national championship and the 1978 Orange Bowl is so sweet it almost makes up for the Hogs’ bowl futility since then.

First Best and Worst

The first game I remember is the ‘85 Holiday Bowl when we beat ASU by a point or two, sitting on my grandmother’s floor. That game has some sentimental value. The next year OU paid us back for the ’78 Orange Bowl and we didn’t win another bowl game until…. The 2000 Cotton Bowl in which we destroyed Texas. There is my favorite.

Worst game, Cotton Bowl against Mizzou. Had a great time in Dallas for New Years; good friends, good times, and then the game. Never mind the fact I had to wake up entirely too early for New Year’s Day; I had great tickets, and the Hogs shit the bed.

I am willing to admit that they were better than we were that year but Mizzou fans still bring up that game as some type of definitive performance. The Big 12 is not a stronger conference because you beat a quarterbackless/coachless team once in 2007. Go die in a fire Tony Temple

Hey that's me!

I thought my therapy sessions were private? I see someone got a snapshot of me and some other Hog Fans pouring out our frustration after the 2007 Cotton Bowl spanking by Missouri. I’m an optimist though. I’m canceling my therapy sessions after this season.

Best/worst

Best – ’78 Orange Bowl. Hands down

Worst – ‘81 Gator Bowl. I was there, but saw nothing. There was an unbelievable fog. You couldn’t even see the game from the stands. LT and the tar Hills beat up on us anyway. Brad Taylor threw for 300+yards and we made a late comback attempt, but…Years later I got to see a recorded replay and you couldn’t see much on tv either!
