Holy Crap: South Alabama 74, Arkansas 61
OK - this is getting alarming. This afternoon, for the third straight game, the basketball Hogs lost to a mid-major in Bud Walton. More half-baked thoughts later this week, but for now, as we all decompress from the Thanksgiving weekend, we pose the following questions:
* Just how depressed about the basketball program are you?
* Is there any hope for this season to be a halfway decent one?
* Has your consumption of grain alcohol increased significantly in the last six days?

Okay, here’s how depressed I am. I didn’t bother to watch the game today. Didn’t even try. Put up some Christmas lights. Came to the office.
Every year since oh, around 1990, I have carefully entered the entire Razorback Schedule in red ink in my calendar, noting the start time of each game and whether and where televised. Full of hope, I would put in the NCAA first rounds, and regional weekends and the Final Four. This year, it hasn’t even occurred to me to do this. I don’t care.
Arkansas has not been this bad since I was a child. But I can’t even scream and rant. This season is lost.
We are now all just waiting on the inevitable coaching search drama.
Arkansas Expats: Acting like the Lost Generation since at least 2007.
Something's broken in Bud Walton.
And I’m beginning to think that Pelphrey may not be able to fix it. He’s got the rest of the season to show “improvement”, and he better. If he can’t, he needs to take a hike.
Quite frankly, I don’t think it’s out of order to start discussing (amongst the fans, of course), who an ideal replacement would be, should this season turn out to be as bad as we think.
The sad part: Off the top of my head, I can’t think of anyone.
Fire Pelphrey
I dont care what people say. He’s ruining the program. You’re not going to teach these boys discipline. Even if we did have alot of players suspended, shouldn’t we still win? We should have D-1 talent to back them up!
Agree
A firing at this time sends many messages to the fans and players. We need to know that the administration does not accept this level of play (which is starting to be a concern). The players need to have a sit-down talk with a true leader.
Heck, it is still November. From what I am hearing and reading, the problems are the same frustrating things from recent seasons: Fundamentals, such as blocking out, hustling, ill-advised shots, etc. These are all somewhat fixable before conference play. Go crazy- have an open tryout for all students. When I was there, there were some students who could play. Football team got any players? (Not Mallett, we need him to not get distracted.)

Depressed? Pretty damn. Hope? Little. Alcohol consumption? Up.
We tried listening to the game on the radio, but could not stand it. The worse part was the announcers talking about how “quick” South Alabama was in beating the Hogs down the floor in transition for easy baskets, or in plain language, how the Jaguars were out-hustling them. Maybe the lack of depth is showing. Nobles fouled out without making a single assist. Powell did not make a basket and was 4 of 8 from the free throw line.
Washington did not play because he aggravated his back. Sanchez played, but did not appear to be very effective.
Good news

worst season ever
Without even going to the record books, I can say Pelphrey and Long have taken us to the lowest level in bball history. Sutton took over in 74, I believe. We had a run until 97 of nationally ranked teams almost every year.
Before Sutton, we were mediocre, agreed, but nothing as pathetic as what we’re viewing now.
Someone said we’re 4 and 20 in our last 24 games. Maybe we’ll win a few in December against the mid-majors. But come conference I don’t see us winning a game. We could lose 22 to 25 games this year.
I don’t have any answers, but I think all the suspensions and last-minute “tweaking” of a back (Washington’s “injury” today) and Cold War secrecy around players’ lives needs to be stopped now. It’s time for Pelphrey to cut ties with the guys who aren’t going to play night in and night out. Then just play the guys who can and will play and gain some consistency. If he can’t find players to do that, he has to go.
We need to see some direction and consistency and inspired play from here on out. If it continues on this course to a 5 and 25 season, I’m afraid Pelphrey will be gone.
Hard to understand
Wow. Like most of you, I am unable to physically keep my ear to the ground in Arkansas. But I have Razorback conduits, make phone calls to resident friends and family, read as many online articles and blogs as time permits, road trips to Bud Walton & Alltel, and then some. I will venture that I am one of, if not the most fervent Razorback fan in Alabama. But when Tide and Tiger fans ask me, “what happened to the University of Arkansas basketball program? Didn’t they used to be pretty good?”, I offer only a sheepish, “yeah, we used to be damn good.” I don’t have any answer as to WHAT HAPPENED.
The slide from our pinnacle under Nolan, began during his tenure. Stan Heath’s teams were mediocre, under achievers, so lackluster they challenged description. Now John Pelphrey’s third season forebodes to be his worst. Pelphrey and our Hogs just lost to the University of South Alabama, the very team Pelphrey ditched to take the reigns at Arkansas.
Is it our coaches? Is it our program? Where is the press? Why hasn’t Patrick Beverley or Jason Henry or Montrell McDonald or Brandon Moore or Andre Clark spoken candidly about their experiences at the UofArkansas? What needs to be done?
I have been reluctant to admit it, but the University of Arkansas has become a bottom tier basketball program in the SEC. I will remain a Razorback, but one seeking intensive talk therapy to alleviate this depression. Please start talking!

The Press
I for one would like to hear from all the players who left the UofA. What is going on with Fortson? Since when does not playing basketball help cure whatever ails him? I thought Washington was a pro prospect. He can’t even suck it up for a home game during a holiday break.
Wow — we’re not bottom tier. We’re the bottom rung.
