Uh Oh
That was my and the interns' reaction after reading this blog post by ESPN.com's Chris Low.
Here's the relevant, blood-pressure-spiking passage:
One of the most intriguing underclassman in the SEC remains Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett, who's a third-year sophomore and eligible to turn pro. According to several close to the draft process, Mallett is continuing to seek out information about where he projects and is 50-50 right now.
Given the potential money involved and the ever-present threat of career-altering injury, I certainly couldn't blame Ryan for leaving early if he's satisfied with where he may fall in the draft. Still, in my oh-so-expert opinion, he's not ready.
He looked pretty shaky against the Hogs' tougher conference foes. And although some in the South seem to disagree, many football experts boldly consider the NFL to be a tougher league than the SEC.

this creates an unusual scenario for the Liberty Bowl...
Is it possible for you to root for your team to win but for your QB to have a really bad game?
mallett
I read Low’s blog but I interpreted it a bit differently. I don’t think he knows anymore than the general public what Mallett is thinking. The “50/50” comment is just him speculating, I myself speculate.
I think he will return, but we’ll see.
Here's something to consider
The NFL’s collective bargaining agreement is set to expire. It appears that the NFL players are willing to throw the draftees under the bus (starting with the 2011 draft not this coming one) in that they’re willing to approve a rookie salary cap much much less than what it currently is. When Matthew Stafford got drafted first overall and was instantly paid more than Eli Manning, who had won a Super Bowl, then something is obviously wrong with the system. So what a lot of draft eligible guys have to consider this year is should they cash in now while the getting is still good.
It’s quite possible that Ryan could get paid more by getting drafted late in the 1st round of this upcoming draft then if he was the number 1 overall pick in 2011.
This is somthing I’ve been talking about all year to my buddies and it just stands to reason that guys will leave early to get their money now and not take a chance that the rookie salary cap nails them or they get injured or both. Not to mention that there still isn’t a collective bargaining agreement in place and that 2011’s draft class may have to wait a long time to get any money at all in the case of a strike or lockout.
You guys don’t want to hear this but I’ve got some contacts and they’re telling me that Ryan is gone after the bowl game most likely. I’ve been planning on Tyler Wilson being our QB next season since about mid September.
Also, consider that Petrino called Brandon Mitchell back from the basketball team to practice with the football team during these extra bowl practices and Mitchell is getting a ton of reps right now in practice (along with Wilson). Unfortunately I think the writing is on the wall. And that sucks because I figured we’d have a shot next year at winning the West with Mallett back and an improved defense (although I don’t know how exactly we’d manage to have an improved defense)
