An Unfan Letter to Tim Tebow in Honor of His Soon Departure from College Football
Saturday brings us one game closer to the end of Tim Tebow as a college football player. In honor of this, I have gone ahead and composed what I call an "unfan" letter to Mr. Tebow. I try to express, outside of always being on the losing end of his exploits as an
Tim Tebow,
The end is near. No, not the end of the world, the rapture, or even the end of talking about Tim Tebow. The latter will go on for many years hence no matter what happens in Saturday’s showdown with
With the end being so near, I thought it was time that I try to get my thoughts together about you and in the process let you know why someone possibly could object to the Tim Tebow phenomena (TTP) that has played out during your career. With there being so many who voice their approval of you and everything you do, I am afraid you might be under the impression that we are all unequivocal fans of you. We are not.
I think even in your bubble of adoration, you must know that especially
FIRST: The media that helped create the TTP is the same celebrity obsessed, bandwagon jumping on media that loses all sense of perspective at a drop of a hat. They have obsessed over you to the point that you’ve become like the song that you keep hearing and hearing on the radio until you are sick of it. "Tim Tebow, Tim Tebow, Tim Tebow." I would have liked you much more if you had stood up and given this promise, "I promise that no one is going to work harder to squash talk about Tim Tebow and focus more of the attention on my deserving teammates more than I will. This I promise you."
SECOND: As someone who thinks the less religion and football are mixed on gameday, the better, I find the bible verses on your eye patches make you look more like a Pharisee than someone who lives by the golden rule with no personal gain expected. I don’t believe anyone is going to have a religious conversion by seeing a bible verse on your eye patches. Though your intent might be noble, what it says to me is "Look at me, Tim Tebow, I endorse this brand of religion!" It looks more like a warm-up marketing stunt for brand Tebow once it passes from the restrictions of the NCAA to the make all the endorsements you can NFL.
THIRD: Patton in the movie "Patton" says
FOURTH: How you have become sacrosanct in the eyes of the media. How dare someone not like the TTP! Group think is the best type of thinking to resist, in my opinion, so part of my not liking you is fueled by everyone telling me there is something wrong with me if I don’t like you.
These are my complaints, and I don’t think I share them alone. This is an unfan letter that I doubt you’ll ever read. But if by chance you do read this and you are as saintly as all your fans say, then I shouldn’t be surprised if you leave flowers and a fruit basket on my doorstep should I?
Consider your cape tugged, Superman,

you enjoy poking the hornet's nest, huh Kevin?
For what it’s worth, I agree with all of the above, but I’ve also posted my own take on it here:
http://www.arkansasexpats.com/2009/01/09/a-few-quick-thoughts-on-tim-tebow/
One point I made in the above link that may only make sense to me is that, aesthetically, I’m not a huge fan of his game. The whole “quarterback as fullback” thing just doesn’t do it for me, and if I never see another jump pass or shovel pass it’ll be fine with me.
Having said that, I’m sure we all come across as incredibly petty (and probably deservedly so) considering he’s dealt the Hogs three tough losses in four years.
Wow
The disdain seems to run pretty deep. Such a non-worthy topic for a Razorback discussion site in my opinion. But since you opened the door………..
Let me make one thing 100% perfectly clear. I am not a member of the Tim Tebow fan club and the fact that my faith happens to be a Christian based one, does not mean that I automatically approve of or even agree with the actions of him or anyone else who proclaims to be Christian. I disliked many of Tim’s celebrations on the field, but let’s be very clear. They were no worse than some of the self promoting chest pounding, smack talking, taunting that now seem to be so common. If un-fan letters are now going to be a regular series on Expats, I’ve got plenty of suggestions for you. Heck, since this is a Razorback site, we could start with our own house. I look forward to your un-fan letter to Courtney Fortson and Steph Welsh.
In your second point, you are clearly makling assumption about why he wears verses on his eye patches. While I don’t know for sure, maybe it has nothing to do with converting anyone else. It might be to nudge fellow persons of faith to read their Bible. Not every action of a Christion is directed at a non-Christian. Athletes will thank God in interviews, point to the sky after a touchdown, say a quick prayer, etc. Get over it. I’m pretty sure no one is deliberately trying to rub it in your face. Hey, that brings up more un-fan letter options, that darn Salvation Army bell ringer, or Santa (that attention seeking bum).
I’m not going to disagree with your third point. Lots of truth there.
You stated "Group think is the best type of thinking to resist, in my opinion, so part of my not liking you is fueled by everyone telling me there is something wrong with me if I don’t like you. – Kev, who exactly is this everyone you are referring who is fueling this dislike? Man, you need a new social group to hang with. I have never, ever, had anyone, and I mean anyone tell me there was something wrong with me if I didn’t like someone. I hear liberal talking heads in the media ramble every day about how great Obama is, but I haven’t let it fuel my dislike of him. I developed that on my own. Oh darn, now see what we’ve done Kev; we have religion and politics in tonights blog. If only tonights blog was about the upcoming bowl game, or the demise of the basketball program, or anything Razorback related.
I’m sorry Kevin, but tonights posting looks more like something that should have been shared with your therapist or pastor (oops, sorry about that one). Surely there are plenty of I HATE TIM TEBOW sites you could have vented on. Probably even a 12 Step Support group for Tebow Haters (“Hi, I’m Kev and I really hate Tim Tebow.”)
Since I would not want to leave without something positive or constructive, I do want to say that Rasputin, Reasons to Hate, and Q&A with the opponents bloggers are great. Of course, those are about the Razorbacks. Seriously, good job. You guys clearly didn’t sleep through too many classes in school and the quality of your writing indicates that the U of A cranks ’em out as good as anyone.
Thanks for letting me share even though I’m a UALR 2 year drop out and not a real Expat. Go Hogs Go.
.
Hi Omaha
Don’t worry – John and I aren’t real expats either. We went to college in Memphis, but we grew up in Little Rock with an unhealthy Razorback obsession, which, for better or for worse, we’ve been unable to shake to this day.
Also, from the sneak preview file, we’ve got an upcoming Q&A with a former Trojan great. He’s got a pretty interesting story to tell.
Thanks for reading the site and being such a regular commenter.

tebow
tebow’s game is ugly and the bible verses are a bore, but he ain’t lost but one game in the last two years. that alone is what drives the tebow media machine. had he lost after that ole miss game where he made the now canonic avowal blah blah blah to never lose again or whatever, he would have been trashed by the press. he didn’t and here he is today, ready to grab a second heisman if they beat alabama.
whatever you dislike about him, he wins. Vince Lombardi would have loved him. I don’t know if God does, but Vince Lombardi sure would.
very true
Tim Tebow is a winner – you have to give him that. He got done against Alabama in the 4th quarter last year, and he did it to the Hogs this year.
1) Tebow did not win the Heisman. McFadden did! He was the ESPN poster boy.
2) Name one amazing memorable “Oh my God”, football game where you said look at that pass, look at that Quarterback take down the opponent in all phases of the offensive game. Tell us the play by play of a game where he threaded the defense like a future NFL QB.
3) I am a man of faith but I don’t think God loves Tebow anymore than the rest of us. Therefore God doesn’t root for Florida on game days.
I don't like being force fed
Tebow is a good college football player. What I don’t like is being force fed by the media and ESPN to the point I want to throw up. He has played the game of college football in a tough conference very well. He is a great player but I am beyond full with all the force feeding by the press. I will get a free lunch after picking Alabama over Tebow Gators. I am ready to pick something else on the menu.
Final Note
I am so sick and tired of being force fed by the media for teams like Ohio St., Michigan, Notre Dame, USC, Oklahoma, Texas, Florida, Penn St., and Florida St. I believe and hope next season this Razorback team will finally put a defense on the field worthy of a national championship. Below is the preseason poll. Polls are meant to keep the media favorites at the top dispite loosing games during the season.
Florida
Texas
Oklahoma
USC
Alabama
Ohio State
Virginia Tech
Oklahoma State
Ole Miss
LSU
Penn State
Boise State
Oregon
Georgia
Cal
Georgia Tech
TCU
Florida State
North Carolina
Utah
Notre Dame
Iowa
Nebraska
Kansas
BYU
