Six Thoughts on the Liberty Bowl

Liberty Bowl Trophy

Liberty Bowl Trophy

The excellent collegefootballnews.com always has a five thoughts section. My brain and I got together and decided I could do one more thought to make it six here on our website. So here are six initial thoughts about the upcoming game with East Carolina. Please add your thoughts in the comment section. Then be sure to read the excellent interview below concerning the 1969 Game of the Century.

1.) Is this a lose / kinda lose game for the Hogs? I don't think so. Nationally, of course, we won't have scented footballs thrown at our feet for beating East Carolina (if we do), but I think it is very important from a momentum standpoint to get a bowl win. We made progress from 5-7 (no bowl), and now we need to take the next step to (7-5) plus a bowl win. The whole vibe around the program was much better for the LSU victory in Little Rock last year. I think the vibe gets even better ending the season with a bowl win of any kind.

2.) If the game is played in nasty weather, give an advantage to the Pirates. If you saw the Conference USA Championship game last weekend, you know the Pirates have played in the muck. The Hogs, on the other hand, they've had nice weather all season. Does the Petrino offense work when cold and wet?

3.) Personally, though I know it isn't as high profile as the Capital One Bowl and doesn't pay as much, I still like the idea of going to a bowl that has kept something of its original name and hasn't gone all corporate on us.  And as you can see by the picture here, not a bad looking trophy. Better looking than a credit card! haha.

Star-divide

4.) Did Willy and the boys luckout by not getting the pass happy Houston offense to deal with? Either way, I wonder if this game might not be a mini job interview for Willy. If the Hogs really stink it up on defense, might Petrino go looking for someone else?  This is not a good year to be named "Willy" and hold the title of defensive coordinator in the SEC (See Georgia). I guess it will depend also upon which coaches are out there. I have to think that Petrino is keeping his eyes open during the coaching shuffle that is December.

5.) Psychology is so important with bowl trips. I hope the Hogs aren't feeling the least bit slighted about not going to the Cotton Bowl. As much as it pains me to say it, Ole Miss did beat us, so I don't have a problem with them getting the nod over the Hogs. The Liberty Bowl feels about right for our Razorbacks at this stage. If they had won at Baton Rouge and got the Capital One, then they are probably in over their heads against a good Penn State team coached by the bowl game master Paterno (23-11-1). And getting in over their heads with a late season rally seems to be a Hog trait (eg - 2008 Cotton Bowl) when it comes to bowl games.

6.) Bobby Petrino at the moment is a .500 bowl coach who won the Liberty while in Conference USA and the Orange as part of the Big East. Our last coach had never been the head coach at a bowl game when he coached the Hogs in the Citrus to a loss. And Nutt never really got the hang of winning bowl games at Arkansas, one of my biggest bones of contention with his era. I like to think that Petrino brings a better talent for the art and science that is bowl preparation. One thing I think we can be certain of, Bobby Petrino won't be texting a female reporter from Fort Smith just before kickoff. haha.

I think the Libery Bowl is a perfect fit for this year's Hogs.

Reading your comments caused some painful flashbacks to the bowl games of the HDN era. I personally think the lowest was the 2000 loss to noted football powerhouse UNLV in the prestigious Vegas Bowl. They not only beat us, they throttled us.

I think Bobby should be better at getting the teams ready for bowl games, but then again, I thought he would have the team more prepared to go up against Ole Miss after the Florida loss. We’ll just have to see.

All we can ask for is progress.

A winning record and a bowl game (and the win!) are good enough for me. If we can’t do better next season, then that’s a different story.

^^^This

I think the Liberty Bowl is befitting of our record this year and I’m fine with it because it means we’ve improved from last year. But if we’re in Memphis again next year…

The right place

I agree with Stephen that we ended up in the right place. I think we were treated fairly for our record, and I like the fact that Hog fans can (and I think will) converge em masse to Memphis. I want a bowl win so bad it hurts. I think we should have no problem with getting one as long as our team does not get flat. I’m anxious to see how CBP gets them prepared for this. I also like the date/time slot.

I too am interested to see what Willy does with the defense in the next month. I was so envious watching Nebraska in the Big 12 title game. What a defense!

Can someone tell me how the bowl earnings are divided up? Do all SEC payouts go into one big pot and divide equally 12 ways or is there some other formula? The 36 million in the two BCS games is freaking awesome.

It's sort of even.

It’s all pooled and divided 13 ways (all 12 teams, plus the SEC office gets a cut for some reason), but teams with better bowls (usually just the BCS bowls) get more to cover their extra expenses.
The economics of the situation is a little misleading. I read an article where Alabama’s cut of the SEC bowl money last season was $2 million, and their expenses associated with the Sugar Bowl were also $2 million, and thus they didn’t make any money.

Isn't that ironic...

So Arkansas made more money out of the bowl season than than some teams that played. Hmph. Go figure.

(or is that not irony… I sometimes get confused on what – technically – is irony and what is simply coincidence.)

I went to school at ECU...

I thought when the match up starting taking shape that I would be somewhat conflicted, but I soon found that the Razorback Blood in my veins runs very deep. I haven’t had a second thought about the Pirates!

As far as the game itself, I am one of those who believes we caught at least a small break by not pulling Houston in this game. As much fun as it would have been to watch the two offenses go at it, I fall short of total belief in our defense to stop that Houston gunslinging.

I feel a bit like I’m betraying the Hogs, but truth is truth and we got the best possible scenerio out of Houston and ECU. It still won’t be a cake walk and we better show up ready to play because ECU will be hungry to knock out an SEC team and has the tools to do it!

I still pick the Hogs to win, but this won’t be a Missouri State finish…
