Are Wally Watches an Endangered Species?

Well, this sucks. Our compatriots in the glamorous world of Hog blogging, the RazorBloggers Network, are reporting that the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette and Northwest Arkansas Times will begin charging $59.00 per year to read their online content. Probably not coincidentally, this policy kicks in on August 5th, the day before football practice starts.

While I fully support the idea that people or companies deserve to get paid for their hard work (and there are certainly plenty of worthy reporters on the staffs of those papers), this feels like a regressive move that isn't going to help anyone in the long term. But, that's a topic for a different discussion...my current concern is the future of our Wally Watch feature.

When Stephen and I started this blog almost two years ago (!) one of our primary motivations, believe it or not, was to provide a public service to Hog fans by analyzing and deciphering Wally Hall's columns...reading Wally "so you don't have to", as the Wally Watch tagline goes. We're just selfless, giving people that way.

But now, that service is in jeopardy. As much as we enjoy breaking down Wally's fractured prose, folksy metaphors and random travelogues, it's hard to justify paying $59 for that privilege...and even if we did, we still wouldn't want to link to a site that would charge our readers to see what we're talking about.

So, where do we go from here? How do we solve this problem? And how will noted Wally Watch fan Chris Bahn handle the news?

We're definitely open to any and all ideas, so if you have thoughts (serious or otherwise), please post 'em in the comments section.

(One final thought: is it possible that Wally Hall himself orchestrated this entire paid content move just to shut down the Wally Watches? I think it is...)

I cannot tell you how disappointing this is...

This Tiger will pledges $5 toward the cause, and challenges all readers to match it. Hey, we could call this a Wallython!

Do your parents subscribe to the print version of the paper?

If so, they get online access for free, and you could use their account. (Though this wouldn’t solve the problem of linking to the columns…)

Damn that Wally

I can’t imagine a great number of Arkansas expats across the nation paying 59 bucks for an on-line subscription to the Dem Gazette. You can look at the Arkansas Times for free on-line, and for Razorback news, well, there are just too many other sources out there that are also free. Though I could be wrong about Arkansas’s readership, I really think the people who do read newspapers there are more likely to prefer it in print. Maybe this will work itself out where they’ll go back to letting people read for free on-line Wally torturing the English language. I wonder too how MrSec.com is going to handle this. He links to Wally a lot.

Fellow Compatriots!

It’s funny…when I read about this yesterday, one of the first thoughts I had was…“Oh no! Will this kill the Wally Watches?” Seriously…it’s always a great feature that our site doesn’t dare try to imitate.

When cbahn gets back from vacation, he’s going to be crushed to hear the news. :s

When I saw the subject line...

of this post, my first thought was “Did Wally get fired?” Guess that would be too good to be true, but that would have definitely killed the Wally Watch.

No, no, a thousand times NO!

Seriously, I’d be embarrassed to admit how much some of these Wally Watches have meant to me.

I just about blew a gasket one chilly morning in the fall of 2007 when, just a few days after Wally had criticized the Tennessee sportswriters and fans for suggesting that Hogs were only semi-literate, he writes a column assessing different campus football traditions, and refers to the “eloquent tailgating” (sic!) that goes on at the Grove in Oxford. As long as I’m not the only one who gets worked up about gaffes like that, I’ll be okay.

So yes, I’ll gladly make a pledge to help continue the service.

Wally Watch will go nowhere...

as long as I’m around. I have the free online subscription as a result of my parents subscribing to the print edition (exactly as proposed by NCbama… kinda funny), so if you guys need me to copy/paste to a Word document, or whatever, I’ll be glad to. I mean, I’m going to visit the site anyway (Demozette and here). It would just be one extra step.

Wally Watch

I’m in $5, if necessary.

Never fear, Ex-Pats. I subscribe to the DoG, and I can scan and pdf, and I can even read the columns and scout the good ones. The Wally Watch will not die!
