Blackout, Hawaiian Style

The Razorback football media guide arrived in the mail the other afternoon, and I spent a chunk of time thumbing through the season-by-season game results near the back of the publication. To prepare for a Q&A that we will hopefully publish in about a month,  I was paying particular attention to the seasons in the mid- and late-1980s.

One of the several personality traits that have kept me single all of these years is a borderline autistic-like ability to recall Razorback games, so I was rather surprised to see a score for an unusual contest of which I have utterly no memory. On Dec. 5., 1987, the Hogs closed the regular season by playing at Hawaii. They won, 38-20, and, according to the guide, the game was broadcast on ESPN. For the life of me, I can't recall this game.

Anyways, we put our vast army of interns and research assistants on the case and while they haven't turned up anything in the way of game specifics, they did get their hands on the home movie below, believed to have been shot by team captain Tony Cherico hours before the game, as he hiked through a Hawaiian cave:

I Was There!

With my ex-wife no less. I sat at a luau with Orville Henry, with whom I was familiar through his knowledge of my father’s football career and a long talk that I enjoyed with at Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor in the late 70’s. As for the game, I recall that Hatfield was already making “Alligator Hide” comments and that it would be terrible if we actually lost to the Rainbow Warriors. The Hog defense almost let Hawaii back in the game, but didn’t after all. Also, we were at the Arizona Memorial for the ceremony marking 46th anniversary of Pearl Harbor Day and there were Japanese veterans in attendance. Quite a trip! I just wish my second wife could have been there instead of the first!!!

There is the answer to a trivia question for you

Just how far into the setting sun have the Hogs played a football game? Hawaii. That is unless they played a game in Guam and didn’t tell anyone, haha.
