BREAKING NEWS: Schadenfreude Widespread this Morning in Arkansas
After Houston Nutt's Ole Miss Rebels lost last night on ESPN to South Carolina 16-10, witnesses began reporting smiles, chuckles, belly laughs, grins, and sounds of "I told you so!" and "That is what we've been talking about!" from Eudora and Helena in the East all way across the state to Fort Smith and Fayetteville in the West. Additional sources from around the globe report that Arkansas fans the world over have had similar reactions to the final score of last night's game.
When the news broke out of Columbia, local weatherman Ned Perme went on air immediately to show the counties affected. He was quoted as saying, "This was nearly instantaneous. But an odd thing, we did see a sign of schadenfreude appear over LA and the USC campus and Auburn, Alabama, before even some counties in Arkansas."
Now certain to fall from their number four national ranking in the polls, Ole Miss is slated to face Vanderbilt next weekend. Past performances indicate that a Nutt coached team usually loses the next conference game after losing the first one. Local Razorback experts say that if Ole Miss were to lose to Vanderbilt that the schadenfreude in Arkansas will be so thick and apparent that Mississippi very well might declare war on Arkansas. An undisclosed source close to the Mississippi governor was quoted as saying after the game, "We've had to put up with 'Thank God for Mississippi' all these years from those jackasses across the river. And now this! We might just have to take those hillbillies out. They'll surrender in a day!" When asked to respond, an undisclosed source close to the Arkansas governor had this to say: "Nutts!"

This will send a lot of people running for a dictionary
Interesting game last night though.

I predict high blood pressure in MS for the next three months.
Run, run, send out a lone receiver and make the quarterback make an impossible throw on third down. Sheesh. Last night was like the Bizarro-world episode on Seinfeld. I was getting all worked up before I realized it wasn’t 2006 and the Hogs weren’t playing. During the third quarter I fantasized about the smarmy B.S. that Nutt would drop at the post-game press conference. Either I’m a soothsayer or I’ve seen one too many of those interviews because I nailed it.
Yes, I admit it did feel (unbelievably) good to see them lose. But just because they lost doesn’t mean they’re a bad team. Honestly, after last night’s game I’m now concerned about South Cakalaka just as much as Mississippi. There were a lot of big bodies out there, and as good as our offense may be (we’ll find out for sure about that tomorrow vs. Bama) I’m not convinced we can match up physically with those two teams. But at least we’re not scared to let our skill players try to make plays.

Grade A Entertainment
I was highly amused watching that game last night. Things I could have predicted or did predict:
Nutt’s second year with a good quarterback would begin that quarterback’s downfall. How many QBs did we see Nutt sink at Arkansas? Think: Tavarius Jackson. Good enough to play start at QB in the NFL, but sucked at AR. Snead’s been sliding all year and did not look good last night.
Nutt would have used at least 2 of his timeouts before his team’s final drive.
Nutt’s team would have a completely boneheaded play or penalty after a timeout (the 12 men on the field on the final 3rd down of the game).
I’m no Nutt hater, but these are the exact same things that made me, especially as a former high school football coach, loose respect for his coaching. All that being said, there is a lot of football left in 2009 and I’m sure they’ll still have a good deal of success.

Another interesting twist...
…is that now Ole Miss fans are in the position of really needing to root for the Hogs against Bama. They need Bama to lose a cheap one to even things up in the SEC West, but I’m sure pulling for Arkansas will be as painful for them as it would be for us to root for the Rebels if the situations were reversed.

Even worse...
…they’ll have to pull for Mississippi State against LSU! This is a tough weekend to be an Ole Miss fan.
