Reasons to Hate: East Carolina

As a public service to Hog fans everywhere, we've been bringing you a few reasons to hate the upcoming opponent all season long. It is with a heavy heart and a single tear rolling down our cheek, then, that we muster up that hate for the final time in 2009-10. Here we go:

ecupirates

1. We're Due, Dammit. This one isn't about East Carolina specifically, but if the Hogs' miserable bowl record can't generate some animosity against whoever they're playing then nothing can. It's been so long since the last Arkansas postseason win that we can barely remember what it feels like...now seems like a perfectly good time to reverse that trend.

2. They Could Send Ryan Mallett to the NFL. We all know that Mallett is seriously considering jumping to the pros after this season, and no doubt considers the Liberty Bowl an audition of sorts for the scouts who will certainly be watching. If he puts up one of his vintage 5 TD, 400 yard efforts he's likely as good as gone. Unfortunately, the Pirates passing defense was ranked 110th nationally this year, giving up 3,410 yards and 23 TDs in the process, so now might be a good time to start getting mentally prepared for the Tyler Wilson Era.

Star-divide

3. The SEC Needs Us. The World's Greatest College Football Conference hasn't been so impressive this bowl season, with Kentucky, LSU and Tennessee all losing and Auburn being fortunate to squeak by Northwestern. So, instead of being the annual turd in the SEC's bowl punchbowl, the Razorbacks could help set things right.

4. Apparently The Pirates are a Pretty Disagreeable Bunch. We don't pretend to understand the backwoods internal rivalries of the North Carolina sports world, but our trusted NC correspondent Tarheel Willie has informed us that East Carolina is at the bottom of the barrel. In an earlier comment, he wrote:

"It’s a universal truth that anybody with any allegiance to a school thinks that fans from every other school are awful. But rest assured that East Carolina fans are a special breed. With a major inferiorty complex from enduring references to EZU (their admissions and curriculum are E-Z) and ECTC (formerly East Carolina Teaching College — for women), they are delisuional in their aspirations for becoming a big-time program and showing everybody else who ever kicked sand in their faces. I’ve watched 14-year-old EZU fans give the finger to my dad. I’ve seen their t-shirts: "One in the poo, two in the goo, c’mon SHOCK ’em ECU!" And they take the pirate thing a little too seriously. Argh, and all that."

That's reason enough for us. Go Hogs!

Classic Tarhole!

Yes you guys are great in Basketball. Now that we have that out of the way. Where do you get off going to an Arkansas discussion forum and putting down the Pirates??

You point out that your Daddy was given the finger by some kid, well, I can’t speak for that. Please don’t sit hear and act as if UNC or any other program doesn’t have a few ignorant fans. I’d say UNC leads the pack in the Carolina’s due to the overwhelming fan base you possess, " who never attended college". Those are typically the ones who put a bad reflection on most programs regarding a fan base. You are telling me that Skip Holtz and Terry Holland have inferiority complexes, give me a break.

Class???? You wont find a classier combination.

To judge the Pirate Nation as a special breed, with a major inferiority complex is a typical comment from those who think they should be viewed as a nationally respected football program and beleive me your not.

Granted we do not have the resources that UNC/NC State and the other ACC programs have, but we compete at your level and above, on a regular basis. The recruiting advantage you have is unbelievable, and what have you accomplished with it over the past 10 years,……. nothing to get excited about.

Remove the Mack Brown era and UNC is a Joke in Football. Hell, Butch Davis just got by this year with a half way respectable season.

EZU please!! Get current with your outdated put downs. Our admissoin standards have increased significantly over the past 10 years, do the research. No college program is easy, higher standards to gain admittance yes, but the ciriculum is just as callenging everywhere you go unless you are at an Ivy league school, Duke or Wake Forrest, but UNC??? Once again give me a break.

You left out that we have a very highly regarded Medical School, specializing in Cardiology. Oh, and there is the new Dental School, both of which you SOB’s did everything in your power to stop.

That being said, all is good at East Carolina University. We are growing at a steady rate and will be the 2nd largest University in NC within the next decade if not sooner.

Our facilities second to none in NC, SC and VA. Dowdey-Ficklen Stadium is being horseshoed as I type and we will be at 50,000 seats next year. Pylons are being set which will lead to the 2nd phase of our scheduled expansion and upwards to 70,000 seats.

Back to Back Conference Championships and 4 straight bowl appearances, no inferiority complex here. Oh, and no cream puffs on our out of conference schedule, hello!

From the sound of it, it looks like the only folks who have an inferiority complex including having their head in the sand are those wearing the Baby Blue.

Go Pirates!!!!!!!!!!!

Rowr!

Hi, Bones89. I don’t know you, but I’m sorry that I got your dander up when I posted a message on my friends’ most excellent and thoroughly enjoyable Arkansas site. Your exhaustive counterpoints clearly demonstrate that you’re not at all suffering from an inferiority complex. No sir. Especially when it comes to comments about Carolina’s halfway respectable program, which — thank goodness — included ECU on its schedule this year.

But enough about that. I hope you’ll join me in congratulating the Hogs on a hard-fought and well deserved win. (In all seriousness, nobody likes to see a kid struggle the way the ECU placekicker did.)
