Did We Really Win That Game?: Arkansas 20, East Carolina 17

It was pretty ugly (0-13 on third downs!!), and I felt really bad for the East Carolina kicker, but it was a bowl win, which doesn't happen too often in these parts. And it was really nice to see Alex Tejada, himself no stranger to missed late-game field goals, come through at the end.

More thoughts later, when we're in a slightly less exhausted state, but we want to hear from you. Fire away in the comments thread.

Woo Pig!!

Win was great! But?

Do you guys think that as bad as Mallet played it’ll make him more inclined to come back?

by arky-chief on Jan 2, 2010 8:42 PM CST via mobile reply actions

I would think so

The announcers seemed very confident that he’s coming back. But who knows what – if anything – they’re really basing that on.

Would hope so.

I’LL take the win anytime but had really thought we would be more focused. May have been the cold though.

I too felt somewhat bad for the ECU kicker

I remember several years ago, the current Alabama kicker (now the all time Bama scorer if I remember what one announcer said) missed two extra points and a field goal or two that resulted in a Hog win against the Tide.

We did not deserve to win this game, but we did. We did not deserve to loose the Florida game, but we did. Does this make even/steven? Dunno…but we won. Looking forward to next season already.

My therapist says

I should never think about that game again.

So thanks.

That has to be the least impressive win I've ever seen.

But, given our sad history in bowl games, I shouldn’t be grading on style points. Here’s hoping that Mallett’s performance was poor enough to keep him in Fayetteville for another year.

Surprised...

…by the number of people online tonight who are disappointed that we didn’t crush them. That was a pretty good team, folks, and we were very fortunate to win that game.

Sure…no one was thrilled with how the Hog offense played. But, as Stephen said, it was good to get a rare bowl win and end the season on a positive note.

(Btw…thanks as always for the linkage.)

Kickers )(*&)(*&!!@

I too felt bad for the ECU kicker, especially being a senior. I’m glad I can still feel sympathy for others; er, empathy if you are a Hog fan.

An ugly win, but still sweet. I was happy to see Tejada go out the way he did. I was not so kind after the first miss.

Kickers.

Right, it was a pretty ugly win, but it’s not like we’ve been cheating the football gods this season. We deserve at least one unmerited win after the Florida game.

I was personally hoping that the ECU kicker would Make the overtime field goal, and that we’d score an easy TD to win the game.

I’ll have to add that, listening to Chuck Barrett interview Tejada on the radio in the star of the game segment, Tejada impressed me as being pretty level-headed, composed, and thoughtful as an interviewee—i.e. Chuck didn’t have to ask a question, supply a plausible answer, and then ask the player if he agreed. Not many players seem able to pull it all together as well as Tejada did.

Hell I felt bad for the ECU players and fans

They beat us, we just got lucky and won. That was as painful a game to watch as the Ole Miss/Okie State game. Just brutal. I’m settling in at the start and we’re moving the ball right down the field and Dennis Johnson fumbles at their 30. I should have known then that it was gonna be a long day.

I recorded the game but I’m not even sure I want to go back and watch that one again. This is the first time in my entire life that I’ve ever sat there after the game and felt bad about a Razorback win. I mean felt bad in that ECU deserved to win that one way more than we did.

Good note...

for Alex to leave on and a better note for Ryan to stay on!

Actually...

Tejada is a junior. He’ll be back, but we also have his replacement coming on next season, so who knows if who will get the job.

Congrats guys

After trying to drink that game out of my memory, I thought I’d stop by and give a few thoughts from the ECU perspective:

This game was huge for our program. Even in a heartbreaking loss I believe we showed the nation that a team from Greenville, NC can not only hang with, but beat an SEC team in every aspect of the game (except sadly, the most important one). Even in defeat this game was huge in regards to our national perception.

Coming into the game I knew that we had the talent to hang around with you guys, but I was nervous about our depth compared to an SEC team. The defense against Mallet was especially impressive and shows why our D-Coord. will be coaching in Tallahassee next season. Our game plan was perfect and we matched the physicality and intensity for 4 quarters.

Poor Ben Hartman. I really can’t express had bad I feel for our kicker. I can’t imagine what it’s like to end your football career on that note… He has been a great weapon for us throughout his time at ECU and has been clutch in almost every other similar situation, making his performance even more mind-boggling. Against Southern Miss just a few weeks ago he drilled two 49 yard FG’s in a tight game.

I think the fan interaction was mostly positive. We stayed at the Peabody (where the ARK team stayed)and were greatly outnumbered, but everyone there was nice and courteous. Unfortunately the fire alarm was pulled around midnight at the hotel our team stayed in, but it only takes one lunatic fan to do something like that and we have our share of those people as well.

All in all, it was a great trip. Beale street was a lot of fun and the Memphis food was great. Good luck in the offseason.

Still not a crook!

Thanks for weighing in.

You guys played a hell of a game, and really deserved to win. We Hog fans are accustomed to some pretty brutal losses, so I know they’re no fun.

And yeah, as a human being it was hard to watch Hartman keep missing. Obviously I wanted the Hogs to win, but was hoping they could do it with a scenario that didn’t involve him breaking down like that. Hopefully he’ll be able to shake it off eventually and remember his better days.

Best of luck next year-

Thanks, same to you guys. What is the word on Mallet? He didn’t help his draft stock much in that game.

Still not a crook!

I thought the same thing

We won, but……
