The Streak Stops at One: Arkansas 84, Oklahoma 74
In a game that will no doubt be remembered as fondly and vividly as the Hogs' 1978 Orange Bowl upset of Oklahoma, the Razorback hoopsters defeated their Sooner counterparts 84 to 74 tonight in Bud Walton Arena. OK, so this game probably won't live in Arkansas history. But for those 48 of us still paying attention to the basketball team, it was an encouraging win nonetheless.
Granted, this Sooner squad won't be confused with the early 70s UCLA Bruins any time soon, but it was good to see the Hogs bounce back strongly from their semi-comatose effort last Friday against UAB. The Hogs led by as many as 17 in the second half.
From the "no surprises" file, sharpshooter Rotnei Clarke led the way, scoring 20 points while making 7 of 12 from the field. Other highlights include the team's making 23 of its 26 free throws, its field-goal percentage of 50 percent, Jeff Peterson's 15 points, and solid efforts by Peterson's fellow newcomers Marvell Waithe, Mardracus Wade and Rickey Scott.
Now if only Marshawn Powell could fully recover from his foot injury, this season could yet turn out to be an interesting and enjoyable one.
For those of you who watched the game, what are your thoughts on tonight's win and the season thus far?

What was encouraging about our poorly coached, sloppy team, eeking out a victory over a poorly coached, sloppy OU team?
Forgive my French, but this team is simply awful. It is not encouraging. It is discouraging. There are junior high teams that rebound better than the Hogs.
Think the Hogs are good? Turn on Michigan State v. Duke right now and tell me we are in the same galaxy as those squads.
Pelphrey’s 2011 recruiting class gets him two more years. Count me among those who don’t think that is such a good thing.

J Hawg - the season may only be five games old ...
but it’s nice to see that you are already in mid-season form! If only Marshawn Powell had come out of the gate so strongly.
I stand by my assertion that last night’s win was an encouraging one. But that’s given the context of the last few years.
I don’t think the Hogs are a good team yet but I do think there are pieces in place – particularly if Powell is able to fully recover – for them to make improve noticeably over the last two years and perhaps make a little noise in conference play. Overall, my expectations are modest: I’d be happy with an NIT bid. I’m sure there are many who would be thoroughly unimpressed with an NIT appearance, but to me it would represent real progress.
Anyway, there’s a ton of basketball left to be played: I’m not gonna write these guys off before Charlie Brown’s Christmas airs.

I'm with Stephen
Last night’s game was the best the Hogs have looked this year and was a marked improvement over the UAB game. They are still a ways away from what we want, but I also see some promise. I like the new players. Get Powell back to 100 per cent, which might not be possible this year, and things could get interesting.

Thanks for reporting on the basketball team
I caught 3 games in person last week and watched tonight from home in frigid Nebraska. I believe we are getting better. I enjoyed the game tonight. Maybe I’m so happy about the football team that I just have a glass half full attitude right now. We’ll see how it goes.
Actually
The professionalism and competence of Bobby Petrino stands in stark contrast to John Pelphrey’s stumbling. If anything, the football team’s success makes the hoops squad look even worse.

excellent
too bad OU is only 3-4 this season. at least things are looking up?
I am trying to start caring about the basketball team again
but they’re making it difficult. The non-conference schedule is better than it used to be, but I still can’t be excited about it.
I appreciate the coverage about them. More !!!’s might help me get more excited.
Not trying to start anything...
But people like J. Hawg (who I’m convinced are “good people”) perplex me. There’s a ton over in the Jump Ball forum on Hogville. When we lose, they’re the first to start screaming. When we win, they’re always quick to point out things like “we looked awful” (though, we didn’t against OU… I don’t know where that’s coming from), “_ is the worst team I’ve ever seen”, “we should have scored 100”, ect…. or they just ignore it entirely.
Can’t you just enjoy the win? I know I can.
