Feel Free to Resume Breathing Now: Arkansas 82, Auburn 79

Well, for a while there, I was convinced that my esteemed colleague J. Hawg had jinxed us. I was worried about this game almost the moment the victory over Georgia ended; it seemed the perfect occasion for a letdown.

But the Hogs dug deep and managed to come away with a wild, wild, wild victory that has left me gasping for breath and with virtually no fingernails. As a friend of mine texted me during the game, "This feels like a Houston Nutt football game."

I'm a little too wiped out to say much else, but before I go breathe into a paper bag, let me leave you with this thought: as of this very moment, at the halfway point of the SEC season, the Hogs are alone in first place in the SEC West. Who could have imagined that during the often-awful pre-conference portion of the season? Or during the bludgeoning at the hands of Kentucky?

What a crazy season this is turning out to be.

As always, please chime in with your thoughts.

Missed the game

I am not even for sure if it was on here. But I’ve been reluctant of late to press the sports gods for favors less I go over what I am due. I have already such a big order in with them right now. I’ve ordered up a Saints victory in the Superbowl! Haha. I hope these sports gods don’t remember that I was at the Liberty Bowl, where I must have used up a chunk of good will. haha. But, hey, a great win for the Hogs! Thanks for the report.

Ugly

No way around it. The Hogs played almost no defense until five or six minutes to go in the game. On offense, Fortson routinely hung on to the ball with wide open teammates calling for a dish. Powell continues to be weak inside and gets dominated by older players. Washington barely showed up. Clarke was uncharacteristically off on his shooting. Again, we won because the other team was simply unable to put us away.

So, okay, we won. And should again on Wednesday. But I was very unimpressed with the showing today. Against real competition, the Hogs would have lost the last three games by wide margins. Nice to be in first in the West, but that’s sort of like being the best soccer player in Nome.

I think you're being too hard on the guys

First off, you don’t consider Ole Miss real competition? They may not remind anybody of John Wooden’s UCLA teams but they have spent a decent chunk of this season in the Top 25. And, Georgia and Auburn’s records may not be the prettiest things around, but they have played a number of quality opponents very well (Georgia has even defeated a couple of ‘em). I don’t think it’s a horrible crime against humanity for the Hogs to struggle to win against either of those two.

Yeah, these guys can still drive you crazy at times, but they have made undeniable progress from last season and from earlier this year. They’re not great, but they’re getting better. That’s enough for me now.

I agree.

Plus, Georgia is a much better team than their record would indicate. They’ve lost their SEC games by an average of 4 points, and just kicked the crap out of a ranked Vandy team.
The Hogs could have played better, sure, but I think it’s worth something that they didn’t give up when Auburn got out to 5 or 7 point leads. Here’s hoping that Washington bounces back from his ankle injury quickly.

Wow.

Just saw the Vandy-Georgia score. Feel even better about Wednesday’s victory now.

I don't know

Okay it hurts that VU lost. But that score indicates an off night for the Dores.

I stand by my Hog criticism. No one in the SEC West, including Ole Miss, can hold the jocks of the top four in the SEC East. Or the Big 12 South or North. The Hogs have won four in a row by playing pretty uninspiring ball.
