Today's Hot Rumor: Arkansas to the Pac 10?
Ok, that headline isn't even the least bit true (as far as we know) but, given the furious speed at which conference realignment rumors are swirling around this offseason, it probably at least made you think for half a second.
The backstory: for the first time in about 20 years, it looks like the college football landscape is headed for a serious shift. Rumors are that the Big 10 is looking to expand and that the consequent domino effect could end up changing nearly everything. The fact is, no one knows quite what will happen and we haven't written all that much about it because it makes our collective heads hurt.
But, as you surely know, one of the hot rumors is that, as part of all the chaos, Arkansas will get in touch with its historical roots and somehow jump ship back to the Big 12 (i.e. the old SWC). Steve Spurrier himself floated this one, and even though Jeff Long quickly shot it down, the chatter persists. For example, a quick search on "Arkansas conference realignment" pulls up more than 39,000 links on Google.
Today "Mr. College Football" himself, Tony Barnhart, dedicated his column to the subject of why the Hogs won't leave the SEC. His logic is simple (SEC = way more money) and makes sense, but that hasn't stopped people from picking it apart (definitely check out the comments section on that article).
Although I personally believe that the Razorbacks will stay in their current spot (if anything, it seems likely that the SEC will expand to include other teams), there's a certain "where there's smoke, there's fire" quality that's hard to ignore. That is, if this many people are making a point of denying the rumors, there must be some substance to the rumors after all...otherwise, why talk about it so much? At least that's one thought...now my head is hurting again.
The other element to all this is the subtext that Arkansas isn't really a worthy member of the SEC. That we've never really been accepted into the club and that the snooty other schools/fans would be quite happy to see us, the dirty interlopers from the other side of the Mississippi, take our Hog calls elsewhere. KevinHog covered this earlier in the week, and I couldn't agree more. I'll write more about this particular element as the offseason drags on, but suffice it to say it will make kicking everyone else's butts this fall even sweeter.
In the meantime, what do you all think? Is the SEC the right home for the Hogs, or should we be thinking about leaving? Vote in the poll below, then let us know your thoughts in the comments section.

I believe Jeff Long
Came out with a statement today or yesterday saying no way, no how are we leaving the SEC. I am glad he said that. But man, I would like another shot at USC, and UCLA, well, we owe them for that Cotton Bowl so many years ago. Just think, John, Arkansas in the PAC 10, well, you are right in Hog country all of a sudden, haha.
that was my ulterior motive for starting that rumor
The Cal football stadium is only about a 15 minute walk from my house…would love to stroll over and see the Hogs!
And you can watch them from
the famous Tightwad Hill, haha, if you so desire. Never been there, but always thought that stadium be one of the more beautifully located ones in all of college football. What with the view of the bay and all.
it is beautifully located, I'll say that
The stadium itself is pretty decrepit, but it’s in a gorgeous location. Unfortunately, it’s also right on top of a very dangerous fault line (literally).
Said it not just recently
I’d reference folks back to episode 25 of Ask the AD – way back in hoops season – when Jeff went on record knocking down this rumor way before it started again with the Big 10 business.

Arkansas belongs in the SEC
because at heart, Arkansas is southern in culture and, since our collective resources basically go to one school, we’ve got the facitlities and coach salaries to compete at the highest levels. We will not fulfill that potential every year in the various major sports (nobody does that), but we are capable every year in every sport. Therefore, whether or not we are somebody’s stepchild is in our hands. Yeah, we have to prove it, but isn’t it more fun that way?
Arkansas to English Premier League????
Since ARK leaving the SEC is absolutely not going to happen, it is better we talk about some interesting scenarios that might. Who might oin the SEC, how many teams will join, what will the divisions look like, is it possible to make 2 sub-divisions within each division with 16 teams, which conferences will have automatic bowl bids, if SEC gets Texas and Miami how big will the TV contract be (can we count that high)? There is quite a bit of uncertainty out there but Ark will not leave the SEC for any league, including the NFL. Reasons, like many of you have said $$ and there just isnt enough state support to change leagues (the poll would have to reverse).
Arkansas belongs in the SEC.
Obviously.
Now, I’m going to make a bold prediction. The Big 10 adds, at most, one team… and it won’t be from the Big XII. I believe that this whole story to add “multiple” teams is mostly a powerplay to force ND’s hand, and it’s not working. I think they might add one team to finally get to a conference championship, but it’ll be someone like Rutgers, Pitt, or ‘Cuse, hardly the home-run that they were looking for.
Because of this rather lackluster expansion, the other dominoes stay standing: the Big XII doesn’t dissolve, the SEC doesn’t pick up the shinier scraps of the Big XII or raid the ACC, and the Big East inexplicably continues to live for a few more years.
Now, I’m just hoping SBNation comes up with a delete button soon so I can remove this if I’m laughably wrong.
