Ryan Mallett: Should We Be Worried?
It's been a weird spring for Ryan Mallett. Although he's racking up preseason accolade after accolade, and surely will be on the short list of folks hyped for all the major awards (Heisman, Davey O'Brien, SEC player of the year, etc) he also has what's feeling like an increasingly worrisome foot injury.
The latest news is that he's pulled out of the upcoming Manning Passing Academy...the original excuse was that he had class (yeah, right), and that was then amended to admit that, by the way, he also needs to rehab his foot after his 2nd (!) surgery of the year.
Brandon Marcello at the Slophouse is tracking the situation with his "Foot Watch" timeline, which reveals that this saga has been going on since February 17. At the time, a 3-4 month recovery time was announced as "very conservative", but here we are in the 5th month and it's still not publicly clear how healthy the foot really is (the 2nd surgery was on June 9).
So, Expats readers, tell me this: should we be worried? I don't need to tell anyone that a season without Mallett at full strength would be, well, disappointing.

DMAC 2.0?
I hope Ryan’s foot has the power of healing that DMAC’s toe had back in 2006. Maybe we can get DMAC to fly in and massage Ryan’s foot for him. I don’t doubt that loyal and true Hog would do it if we asked him.
Maybe...
Maybe not. I’m getting the feeling that we haven’t been told the whole story. That’s not necessarily cause for concern, though. Nobody ever said that the injury was “simple”, just that he would be ready for fall practice; the two aren’t mutually exclusive. It also means that the competition doesn’t know the whole story, either.
I was already worried before the second surgery.
From day one, knowone I’ve spoken to seemed to take this thing seriously, saying Mallett has plenty of time to recover.
IMO, that’s missing the boat completely. With as much work that Ryan needed with his footwork, accuracy and overall mechanics in his timing, he’s lost out on a ton of work leading up to a season in which we are expected to break out offensively.
I noticed just recently that ESPN ( Chris Low, I think) posted an article about how Mallett believes throwing the ball with a shorter stride, because of the boot he was wearing, has helped him with his accuracy?………..ahem…..really?
Man, I sure hope Petrino let’s him keep that boot on when the season starts.
