Where I Come From: My Favorite Razorback Football Team

This is the second in a week-long series of posts sponsored by EA Sports NCAA Football 2011.

It was a team that began its season with another nationally televised bloodletting at the hands of the USC Trojans and ended it with a heartbreaking three-game losing streak. And it was a squad dominated by an ugly quarterback controversy that would help pave the way for the head coach's departure one year later.

Yes, at first glance, the 2006 Razorbacks might seem like a strange pick for my favorite Arkansas football team. But in my more than 25 years of following Hog football, I've never had more fun.

For starters, there was that glorious 10-game winning streak. Sure, the Hogs caught a couple of lucky breaks - i.e., Vanderbilt and Alabama - but after the lost years of 2004 and 2005, I was just happy to see the Razorbacks win in any shape, form or fashion. Included in that streak are two of my all-time favorite victories: the 27-10 dismantling of then-No.2 Auburn in Auburn and the 31-14 thumping of then-No. 13 Tennessee in Fayetteville (that was the day that ESPN's College GameDay was broadcast from the U of A campus).

And fueling it all was the dynamic duo of running backs Darren McFadden and Felix Jones. Arkansas has had its fair share of exciting players over the years, but in my humble opinion, never have the Hogs been armed with such a compelling one-two punch. (Watching those two shred defenses who knew they were the Hogs' only real offensive weapons was enough to prevent the following season - so disappointing in so many ways - from being a total bummer.)

One week after pounding the Vols, the Hogs, by then ranked No. 5 in the country, defeated Mississippi State to clinch the SEC West championship and stretch the winning streak to 10 games. Incredibly, Arkansas at that point was on the fringes of the national championship picture, a place no one could have imagined they would be when they opened the year by getting pounded 50-14 by USC.

Unfortunately, it was all downhill from there, as the Razorbacks would close the year with blood-pressure-spiking and soul-crushing losses to LSU, Florida and Wisconsin to finish with a 10-4 record.

For some, the bad of that season may outweigh the good. That, I completely understand. But, in my years of fandom,  the Arkansas teams that have been nationally relevant have been few and far between. And rare is the time when a program features two running backs as insanely good as McFadden and Jones.

Heartbreak may have been the 2006 squad's destination, but their journey was unforgettably exciting.

Enough from me. What is your favorite Razorback football team of all time?

1987 Season is probably my favorite

It had ALMOST everything.

If Atwater doesn’t drop that sure interception in the endzone against Miami the Hogs would have been playing for the National Championship.

Beating Texas that year on the road was awesome. Texas A&M mouthing off coming into Fayetteville for the last conference game of the year saying that they were gonna prove that they were better than Arkansas and would be Cotton Bowl bound if not for that pesky little thing called probation and beating A&M in a tough, hard hitting football game.

We were sitting at 10-0 but alas, heartbreak was just around the corner as usual. The loss to Miami and then in the bowl to UCLA to finish 10-2. But still a fun year and I loved that flexbone baby. Loved it!

Nit-pick

That was actually 1988. But, yeah, I agree: that was a great season. I considered picking that one, but in the end, 2006 won out.

I don’t think those last two Ken Hatfield teams get enough credit. Those were great seasons.

1975 and the Immortal Teddy Barnes for me

That was the team I enjoyed the most watching, and had more of my favorite Razorbacks than any other squad. The last three games were convincing victories over ranked teams, and the Hogs ended up the season ranked No. 3. I watched the Texas A and M game at the student lounge at Ole Miss and about levitated to the ceiling when Barnes caught that pass with his face guard. I would put Jerry Eckwood and Ike Forte up against any other running back tandem in Arkansas history.

I also think the 1975 Razorbacks are probably the most underrated of the great UA teams.

Hoping that the 2010 Hogs become my favorites...

Otherwise, 2006 will have to do, even if it began and ended on sour, sour note.

This is hard to say for a number of reasons

But my favorite season/team was Nutt-job’s first season, 1998. Wow, out of nowhere here come the Hogs rattling off 8 in a row. Those were heady times. Of course, we were ultimately to succumb to the all too familiar collapse that began with the Stoernover. I was in my 3rd year in undergrad at ‘Nam and man oh man, what a season to remember. And in retrospect, I’m ok with the Stoernover, because it set up the ultimate redemption game in my Razorback fandom, which of course was the thriller in ’Nam in ’99 during which I was privileged enough to put a handprint on one of those goalposts. Plus, it included a victory over LSU in the Rock, which is something I always relish.

Year in My Head

I think my favorite season is the one that still exists only in my head. You know, the one where the Hogs win it all, SEC, National Championship. I don’t know how long it will have to keep playing up there, but I certainly will welcome it with open arms when it comes out into the sunlight.
