Way Back Wednesdays: A Wild Night in Tuscaloosa - 2007

Each Wednesday, we take a look back at a memorable and/or important (to us, anyway) Razorback game. So, sit back, relax and let the memories (and, in some cases, the heartache and angst) flow.

In September 2007 - when this site was just more than a month old and went by the possibly-copyright-infringing name of Razorback Expats - Alabama dealt the football Hogs what I think is their most heartbreaking defeat since John and I entered the highly glamorous and highly lucrative Razorback blogosphere.

The contest was the second game of what would turn out to be Houston Nutt's final season as Arkansas' coach and just the third game of Nick Saban's tenure at Alabama. The Hogs, featuring the dynamic running back duo of Darren McFadden and Felix Jones, were ranked No. 16 heading into the contest, but the unranked Tide charged out to leads of 21-0 and 31-10 before the Bryant-Denny Stadium crowd.

But the Razorbacks didn't fold. In the second half, Casey Dick threw for two touchdowns, and Darren McFadden ran for two more. Just like that, Arkansas had a 38-31 lead with a little more then 8 minutes to go … and that's when our heartache began.

Star-divide

Saban made a controversial decision to settle for a field goal with just more than 4 minutes left in the game, and Leigh Tiffin shook off the case of the yips that had so memorably plagued him in Fayetteville the year before to nail a 42-yard kick to trim the Hogs' lead to 4 points. Arkansas was stopped on its next possession after 6 plays, and the Tide began their final drive drive on their own 27 yard line. After a couple of at least semi-controversial pass-interference calls on the Hogs, Matt Caddell hauled in a 4-yard pass from floppy-haired Tide quarterback John Parker Wilson with 8 seconds to play for the game-winning touchdown.

When this wild and draining contest was over, each team had 450 yards of total offense, and Nutt had some predictable comments. "I thought that we started playing football like we know how to play it," he told the AP. "We showed a lot of heart and a lot of character. I really thought this was our game."

For Hog fans, the pain was intense (the ending prompted this loquacious post from my co-editor), and, unfortunately, the game set the tone for a disappointing season. Less than three months later, Nutt was the coach of Ole Miss. (This may be of some small comfort for Hog fans - it isn't for me - but Alabama did have to subsequently vacate this victory due to some sort of NCAA violations.)

Hopefully the 2010 season will prove to be every bit as fun as 2007 was frustrating but for now let's wallow in our misery a little: What are your memories of this heartbreaking evening?

The official timeout that let Alabama set up a play, like calling LSU’s running back out of bounds in last years game, was the difference. Too bad Nutt had to throw Casey under the bus after the game.

As disappointed as I was,

I have to say my platonic love for DMAC grew a great deal that day. He did so much to make that comeback possible. It was a pity that he couldn’t have been in there for the closing minutes. If he had been, we win that game, I think.

Too bad that season couldn’t have ended with the win over LSU. The Cotton Bowl appearance, brought to you by 0-1 Reggie Herring, was such a mockery of what that team was capable of.

Good comments, Kev.

I agree: DMac was a monster that evening, particularly in the second half. He was really fun and inspiring to watch that night, even in defeat.

I made the incredibly stupid mistake of watching that game at a nearby sports bar with some people who had no emotional investment in the contest (they were there simply to get sloshed and casually take in the 4,000 games that one could watch in the bar).

Some fool kept trying to talk to me about his recent trip to Europe as the game reached its final minutes. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever been as irritated with someone in my life.

I seemed to have blocked this game from my memory

And after reading the summary, I’m okay with that.

Houston Nutt = Jack Crowe

The last play of our final drive in that game was a draw play that Felix tried to bounce outside that was reminiscent of of Jack Crowe running the same play on third and forever against Tennessee in the early ’90’s in Fayetteville. Glad I don’t have to watch that garbage play calling anymore.

My greatest regret of this game was thinking the game was over early in the third quarter. I spent most of that quarter talking to Marcus Harrison’s momma on the concourse because neither of us could bear to watch. Meanwhile, we roared back. I went back into the stadium in time to ask Ernest Mitchell’s little brother why Mitchell got ejected from the game. Still not sure.

Anyone else remember the only two pass interference calls of the game against us coming inside the last minute or so on the same guy?

This was just a crazy game. One of those games I still think we should have won going away, and one of the games that will make me hold a grudge against HDN until one of us is d-e-d.

Heartburn!

Watched that game with my mother-in-law visiting after the birth of our third child. Definitely a heartburn-inducing experience (the game, that is). Got an email from a friend in Alabama who was pretty taken with DMac’s performance, right up till he had to be lifted for fear of a concussion. Said my friend, “Bear probably would’ve left him in there.”

Last play actually for us was a Casey Dick rollout for a pass. He was supposed to keep the ball if it wasn’t there to keep the clock running. It wasn’t there and it was almost intercepted and the clock stopped.

I was there and it was horrible.

Yes DMAC continues to play we win.

Also before half 1st goal at the 3 yard line and we are running it down their throat….Nutt calls 3 pass plays in a row and we settle for a FG.

Worst coach game I’ve ever seen. Well I take that back there were a bunch during his tenure.
