Is it time to get a new coach for the men's basketball team?

Is it time to get a new coach for the men's basketball team?

Pelphrey has had four years and it has been nothing but top recruits getting suspended, uninspired play, and a mounting pile of losses.

Star-divide

Regardless, the incoming class, should Pel be the one to lead them?  Should he be the leader of the men's basketball program?  Post your vote in the poll and let's see what the members of Arkansas Expats have to say.

I know that if we were to get a new coach it won't be a "big name".  We would be forced, due to the condition and the current reputation of the program, to hire a possible up-and-coming assistant or a coach from a small school.

What is your vote and thoughts?

I voted “No.”

And while some of y’all will probably write off my opinion because of my username, as I posted a while back I am a big-time Arkansas basketball fan and have followed the program since I was around 8 years old and they switched over to the SEC.

I’d say give him two years. Let him see if he can either develop next years Top 5 class for a year or so and/or build off that class into another nationally strong recruiting class.

This year is basically a lost year from a national perspective, and the following year when those freshman arrive could be better. But I think it would be fair to give him two years with that freshman class to see if there is any development going on and the program is advancing.

he has already had "top classes"

and he still loses. I don’t see how giving him another year would be beneficial to the program.

If this class is supposed to be “Fab 5” type of great, then why give a coach that has shown over the course of four years that he can’t get the most out of players and they often under perform for him???

With the following “four star” recruits since Pel has been here you would thin the program would have been better:
Courtney Fortson – 4 star 2008 (two years, great as fresh, issues as a sopho)
Jason Henry – 4 star 2008 (played one year then gone)
Marshawn Powell – 4 star 2009 (still on team, great freshman year, injured most of soph year)
Rickey Scott – 4 star 2010 (avg 13.1 min during freshman campaign with 3.6 pts and 1.2 assists 1.3 a/t ratio).

There have been several other three star players (Rotnei Clarke for example) but they have not improved after getting on campus or they leave after one to two years.

Basketball is not like football. In Basketball you get a hot class and challenge for a title that year, then build off it. Coach Pel has had a losing record every year other than his first year (with Heath’s players)

I said no.

In short, Pelphrey is where Willy Robinson was the last two years. It has taken Pelphrey longer because of the state of the program was in when he got here, and since many recruits didn’t know who he was, in roads for quality recruits (ability & character) have taken longer to develop. He has gotten us to a good spot now.

he took over a program that had back to back NCAA Tourney appearances

TX-HogFan,

Normally I agree with most of your posts, but I have somewhat of a different take on this.
I agree that CJP has had what seems to be plenty of time to show whether or not he can build this program, but considering his first real class had to pretty much take on everything the following season with 6 Srs graduating, it was already common knowledge that CJP would get a 2 year pass with the program. That’s where it seems to get a little sticky with most folks.
Year 3 was suppossed to be the 1st year CJP and his new recruits showed improvement in the win/loss collum, but unfortunately, Juco recruit Montrell McDonald started an avelanch of bad breaks for CJP and the basketball program that year, followed by the ineligibility issue of Marcus Monk at mid-season and then disipline issues surrounding Cortney Fortson, grade issues (not going to class) with Jason Henry, and then the release of Brandon Moore and the Clark kid of their scholorships.
I realize a lot of fans want to pin those issues, or at least most of them on CJP, but how many of those issues can actually be warranted as CJP’s fault? None of us really know for sure.
Now, with that being said, does CJP get another year to show signs of improvement? I think most would say yes, but with serious caution. (me included)
So, here we are in year 4 and growing more and more weary of CJP. Have we improved in the win/loss collum? Not really, and the road woes look to be much of the same dating back 2 seasons ago.

This is my take up ’till this point.
1. CJP seemingly has the APR back on track, which is amazing, considering almost every single player on the squad was facing possible ineligibility for the following season.
2. We have a remarkable recruiting class coming in next season. Most likely the best we have ever seen here at the UofA on paper. CJP should get a lot of credit for this.

This is the part where I disagree with you.

We are in a much better situation and look to be a much more attractive program now with our basketball program than we were when CJP first stepped onto our campus.
This means CJP has accomplished 2/3s of what he was hired to do back in 2007.
Unfortunately, he looks lost with these players in communicating what he wants on the floor, which brings me to the conclusion that if he can’t somehow marginally turn the current season around and at least produce a competitive team on the road in this league, then it may be time to look at other options.
I like CJP, but he has to show some kind of sustainable improvement, otherwise, I don’t believe he’ll get a chance to coach next years recruiting class if a proven and winning head coach can be attained after the season..

good post Gonzo

I like that they continue to win at Bud Walton. If they remain undefeated at home that will be a huge plus for the program. So far the one win on the road is not that good. Hopefully they can pick up at least one, maybe two more this year. I think a sign of improvement would be to win a game in the SEC Tourney.

I want to see improvement. I had not been seeing much recently.

I said Maybe

Maybe I’ve lived in Deep South Alabama too long but I want him to have one more year. I’m pretty sure he doesn’t have any grey hair yet, so he’s still learning how to manage talent. According to Wikipedia (so it must be true), the average tenure of a hog basketball coach as been 9.6 years. With a few minor mentions, the following is the lineage: Glen Rose, 1st and 2nd era – 21 years; Eddie Sutton, 10 years; Nolan, 16 years; Stan Heath…4 years….We should give him at least one more year than Heath.

Okay, the Ole Miss game is done

Now. Is there any person with any basketball sense alive who thinks Pelphrey should remain as head coach?

Really?
