Hog Call Podcast: The Vandy Win, Hoops and Gridiron Recruiting, Tyler Wilson vs. Brandon Mitchell

For more than two months, a nation has waited with bated breath for the return of our "Hog Call" podcast. On this Sunday, January 30, in the Year of Our Lord Two-Thousand and Eleven, it thrills us to no end to announce that the wait is over.

In this episode, our guest is Jim Harris, a longtime chronicler of the Arkansas Razorbacks who is now the editor of ArkansasSports360.com, a favorite site of us Arkansas Expats staffers and a must-read for anyone who follows the Hogs. Together, we discuss Saturday's fantastic win over Vanderbilt, the 2011 basketball and recruiting classes, the need for more fan support at Bud Walton Arena and the looming battle between Tyler Wilson and Brandon Mitchell for the starting quarterback job. For those who hold the Hogs' appearance in the 1997 NIT Final Four near and dear to their hearts, we even discuss that as well.

Good stuff

I thought Jim made several good points, particularly about the time it takes to build relationships these days in basketball recruiting. Calipari can change schools and immediately reload a bare cupboard, but it is a different matter for Pelphrey coming from South Alabama. Except for A.J. Walton, whom he might not have had a chance with, Pelphrey hadn’t missed any prime in-state players. Out of state, he got Powell last year and Wade and Scott this year and has two prime out of staters for next year. So I think he is making inroads. One of the sad things about next year’s class is that Arkansas is bursting with top Division 1 talent and he can’t get them all, but he does have the top three.

This was the first I heard that there might be other signees. Since they are already one scholarship offer over what they can deliver, it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

I want to thank John for holding off while Stephen and Jim talked hoops, I know he had to be chomping at the bit to get to football.

baited

…a nation has waited with baited breath.

The word is ‘bated’. Think of that word like it’s a shortened version of the word ‘abated’.

‘Baited breath’ might be like fish breath after it swallowed the cricket. :-)

Looks to me like the Hogs have a lot of winnable games left on the hoopyball schedule.

Six home games, four away, only one ranked team in Kentucky. If they split these games you’re looking at 19-11. Six and four from here out gets you to 20 wins. Pretty respectable. Let’s buckle down and get it done Hogs!
