Looking at the 2011 NFL Draft

Well, the first BIG "I am not entering the draft" has been uttered this year with Andrew Luck announcing that he is going to return to Stanford for next year.  I wanted to look at what I feel are the NFL draft prospects for various Razorbacks.

Star-divide

To start, our favorite QB, Ryan Mallett.  I think he would benefit from another year under Coach P.  Mallett's performance in the Sugar Bowl highlighted many of his positives and negatives.  Yes, he has the ability to make every throw needed in the NFL and the touch he showed on those TD passes were true things of beauty.  However, the NFL is a blitz, blitz, blitz, and blitz some more league.  Mallett showed problems dealing with that pressure and getting the hot read to beat the blitz.  Until he is able to deal with pressure he will be a mediocre NFL QB (Like the former Texans QB Carr).  All NFL caliber QB's can make the throws without pressure, it is the great ones that can make the throws when they are under pressure.  He currently ranks behind (in no specific order) Cam Newton, Jake Locker, and Blaine Gabbert as the top QB's entering the draft.  I don't know if he is a lock first round pick anymore depending on the need of teams.  QB is still the golden position in the NFL and teams will reach when they think that they have a "franchise player"  My feelings if he will enter the draft: 80%

Now the WR's Joe AdamsJarius Wright, and Greg Childs.  With the top WR's that are available and possibly entering the draft I don't see how any of these three could be a pick in the top three rounds.  With the way that Mallett distributed the ball to various receivers I don't see how any could really stand out.  Joe Adams is an amazing talent but under the magic 6' to make the NFL drool.  Childs is also an amazing talent and has the size but the injury ended his season early so he brings additional questions to his immediate draft future.  Each of these I would put at under 10% that they enter the draft.

These are just my initial thoughts and will continue to add to this as the pre-draft season moves along.

On Childs draft status...

I think he could be elevated back up close to where he was if he heals well (100%) andshows out for the NFL scouts. I thought he was beginning to look like an NFL lock before his knee injury, even more so than Mallet.
I think at worst we lose these 2, but no more.

yep

Oh well, it was nice to dream. I hope that Mallett is drafted by a team in a good situation with some of the key pieces around him. If is is picked by a Cleveland, Oakland, Seattle, Carolina, Washington or a Buffalo type team (teams with many missing parts) he most likely won’t have that great of a career. If he would be drafted by a team like Tennessee, Arizona, Jacksonville, or maybe San Francisco – teams that have a solid running game that would take a lot of pressure off a young QB – he could be the starter and have a successful year and career.

Update:

looks like the true measurables are coming in. DJ was measured at the Senior Bowl at 6’2" 235. NFL teams don’t like TE’s of that size. He will have to catch on as a FB or possibly H-Back and those are not usually drafted.
