Another Victory in the Farmyard Brawl: Arkansas 44, South Carolina 28

Well then. No doubt motivated by my gloomy predictions in last week's postgame thread, the Razorbacks responded with their best game of the season, thumping South Carolina 44-28 and laying to rest any lingering doubts about their fitness for the top 10.

Plus, thanks to LSU's 9-6 blowout of Alabama, the Hogs are potentially on course (repeat after me: must not overlook Tennessee and Mississippi State...must not overlook Tennessee and Mississippi State) for a verrrrrrrrrrry interesting showdown against the Tigers on Thanksgiving weekend. So yeah, it was a good day for Arkansas.

The effort certainly wasn't perfect - in the first half alone Ronnie Wingo and Cobi Hamilton each dropped wide open TD passes, the defense handed the Gamecocks a touchdown thanks to multiple penalties, Tyler Wilson threw a pick six and Zach Hocker missed a couple of field goals - but the Hogs managed to rebound after pretty much every bad play with something better. And, credit is due to the often-maligned defense for a strong night: they were constantly in South Carolina's backfield, and forced some very huge turnovers.

Other standout moments included:

* Dennis Johnson's 98 yard kickoff return for a TD in the 1st quarter.

* Actually, pretty much everything DJ did was a standout moment...he was a one man offensive show at times.

* Jarius Wright carving up yet another defense with two TD catches and 103 yards receiving.

* Jake Bequette, an absolute beast all evening, capping his big night with a crushing sack (pictured above) of Connor Shaw for a fumble deep in Gamecock territory.

Oh, and by the way, with five wins in their last six meetings, Arkansas officially owns South Carolina. Jeff Long is signing the paperwork on Monday.

That's enough from me...what do you guys think about the game? How are you feeling about the Hogs at this point in the season?

Boy did Jake murder shaw on that sack. And you could see it coming. Thought the defense played good bend don’t break d which all that can be asked at this point.

Anyone else feel like the offense could go full spread and score 50 points a game?

Dj awesomeness and no fumbles even awesomer

It's all coming together.

Just keep focused and take them one at a time and the big prize is still there. For some reason lately we can’t handle Bama but we give the Bengals hell, so keep it up Hogs!

Steve Spurrier sums it up

"Arkansas played very well, and they were a lot better than we were tonight certainly, on offense, defense and special teams," South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier said.

TUSK was impressed

The live mascot for the University of Arkansas is named Tusk. He is a Russian boar that closely resembles a wild razorback hog and weighs in at approximately 400 pounds. Tusk attends all home Razorback football games. I can only imagine what he might have been thinking as he rose to his feet again and again thinking he had family members playing in this game. The way Dennis Johnson weaved and shot forward with busts of speed. The way the defense rammed the offensive players to ward off the enemy. He must have been thinking this is more reflective of why he is the mascot. He said damn now that is the way I would do it if they would just get me in one of those outfits. He must have said to himself give me a way to catch that ball and I can make some serious runs after the catch. I bet he was thinking get me out of this cage and turn me loose on this rooster.

With a little imagination I think you could write a much more funny and reflective comparision and contrast article about TUSK. Have at it!

by allen_texas_hog on Nov 6, 2011 1:01 PM CST reply actions

I think you did fine getting inside of the mind of a pig! haha.

I also have reason to think that Tusk’s least favorite show right now is “American Hoggers.” Yeah, I find the old man on the show interesting and funny to watch, but I hate seeing our mascot abused by Texans!

by KevinHog on Nov 7, 2011 7:48 PM CST up reply actions

Is it true Tusk is their middle name

Tyler Tusk Wilson
Dennis Tusk Johnson
Jake Tusk Bequette
Joe Tusk Adams
Jarius Tusk Wright
Jerry Tusk Franklin
Zach Tusk Hocker
Is the whole team Tusk brothers?
I think all the players on this team that led to the victory and the one to come at LSU has got to have some Tusk in there somewhere.

LSU will destroy us

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but LSU’s D-line looked like they were better than the Arizona Cardinals D-line last night. Their second string is better than most teams’ first. I don’t see any way our young O-line won’t get absolutely dominated on that Friday after Thanksgiving. Having said that, I still think we have a chance because I’m a delusional Hog fan. If we beat LSU in their place, we will have earned a spot in the National Championship. They are clearly the best team in college football right now.

by HogAlumnus on Nov 6, 2011 3:48 PM CST reply actions

Not quite convinced about that just yet

Games are all about matchups. Seems to me we have matched up well against LSU the past three years. If we continue to play well I think we will see something similar to what we have seen the last two years when we play LSU. We might see a repeat of the passing game dissecting and frustrating LSU into bad decisions. We just have to do enough against their run game to slow the pace of this game to a crawl. See Alabama caught us early when we were trying to get better with new talent in various positions. Unfortunately LSU gets us after a season of growing up as a more complete team. Big difference in my view. I don’t see the same results 38-14 as happened at Alabama. LSU has the home field advantage but, HEY we are doing pretty darn good on the road this year. I am more focused on the Tennessee team. They played SC to a 14-3 lost. Let’s start there and work our way into the LSU comments in three weeks. Another problem most teams in the SEC have to deal with is the Arkansas offense that when executing can rock their world. Don’t rule out kicking game in close games.

more on LSU

I agree with allen_texas_hog in that we first need to worry about Tennessee then Mississippi State before we worry about LSU.

However, Alabama had 200 yards passing on LSU. West Virginia had nearly 600 yards passing against LSU. If Timex can have a moment I think he can pick apart the LSU defense.

What scares me about LSU is their running game. The Hogs have yet to show me that they can stop a power running attack. Maybe the Miss. St. game the week before LSU will be a good measuring stick.

I think LSU was lucky to win that game last night. That interception at the goal line looked like the Alabama player had it when he hit the ground. If ’Bama makes ONE FG they win the game. It is very odd for a Saban coached team to have three missed FG plus one block.

I think you make good talking points

Tennessee can seem to be surprisingly good one moment and really bad the next. A Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde team can be tricky. Mississippi State plays in that same vain. Agree with the views on the Alabama game completely. FIELD GOALS may be the difference in our game with LSU. Hocker “The Silent Assassin” when in his zone can win the big one. Has he carried this team on his shoulders this year? Well maybe we will see that in the next three games.

Also: Missouri to the SEC?

I know that the conference needs 14 teams to balance the divisions, but why did we accept Mizzou? Yes they’ve had a good run the last few years, but before that they were perennially dismal. It seems like the best football conference in the nation is settling for second-tier Big 12 teams; I don’t get it. Enlighten me, Expats.

by HogAlumnus on Nov 6, 2011 3:57 PM CST reply actions

Simple

St. Louis and Kansas City.

That being said consider this:
Mizzou is better than Kentucky, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, and Tennessee (this year) in Football (possibly better than Vandy, but Vandy is better than the Vandy of old)

Missou is better than many other SEC schools in Basketball (the Hog/Mizzou basketball rivalry is getting me excited)

And the final reason why they have been added to the SEC is that Missouri, along with aTm, is an AAU member university. There are not that many AAU member universities in the SEC and this really helps the academic structure of the league. (Vandy and Florida were the only AAU members before)

What a great game

Dennis Johnson had his best game since Florida ‘09. Tyler Wilson shined against a slightly over-rated, but stout passing defense. The offensive line had their best game of the season against a great defensive line. Every aspect of the kick returns brought a smile to my face. Jarius Wright turned in another stellar performance. The decision to go Wild-Hog with B-Mitchell at the helm was a brilliant one by our coaching staff; we had become ineffective in the red-zone and that move was the perfect remedy. And hats off to the defense.
The drops were disheartening but I have faith that this will be fixed.
I’m sure most of you have noticed that the Tennessee game was picked up by ESPN2 for the 5 o’clock time slot. I am very happy that we didn’t get stuck with a morning game.

Redemption

How about Zach’s fumble recovery? That was awesome. Oh, and the fact that we didn’t even need Mr. Breeding was quite cool.

by omahahog on Nov 6, 2011 5:20 PM CST reply actions

Good point

I thought we were going to need Breeding in this game for field position. I guess we are saving that for next week!!!

Willy gets the bye week

I can’t beat him up to much this week because we won nicely but don’t make me come back next week and throw some comments at ya! There is still more to work on Willy.

by allen_texas_hog on Nov 6, 2011 5:52 PM CST reply actions

Totally agree

Just can’t jump on Willy after a performance like that, but i’ve got my eye on him!

#8 in BCS???

So we beat a #9 USC-E team by 16 pts and drop a spot in the BCS?

Seriously?

And Oregon beats a mediocre (at best) Washington team and jumps us?

This proves the BCS is a joke. How can they justify this? I could see us staying put as no one besides Bama lost ahead of us. But to win and fall???

Unbelievable…

LSU is beatable...

Alabama left some points out there against them with penalties, missed FGs, and turnovers.

Fumbles. It was always Fumbles

Just wanted to say congrats to you guys.

Sorry that we aren’t better and thus give you guys less points for the win, but good luck the rest of the way. I’ll be looking forward to the Arkansas-LSU matchup.

He gets to finish the season though.

by Ron Carter on Nov 7, 2011 12:24 PM CST via mobile reply actions

it is getting interesting on Red Cup rebellion

but please don’t go over there gloating about the Nutt getting canned. We knew what they were getting, they didn’t. It doesn’t do any good to go around beating your chest about it.

Besides, we need Ole Miss to be better for the good of the conference. Having them get embarrassed like they have been hurts all over.

I only give the Red Cup guys positive comments, the very few times I have ever commented on their board.

On the other hand, I think they should be required to keep Nutt. I mean, after all, we obviously didn’t know what we were talking about when we said he was a terrible coach did we?!

Still room to improve

I think this was our best game so far. To many mistakes on both sides but we went out and handled our buisness. Hopefully we got our heads on straight and take care of the Vols and Bulldogs instead of looking towards the Battle of the Boot. LSU is a dominent team but I believe we can play with them if we play a perfect game.
