Mallett a choke artist? Breaking down the stats

A defense of Mallett's production against Top-25 competition during his two college seasons, plus a breakdown on how those numbers stack up against Newton, Gabbert, Locker, Dalton and Ponder.

"One of the largest questions looming over the upcoming NFL Draft is how far Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett, once a seemingly sure-fire top-15 pick, will drop. Some commentators — CBS’ Phil Simms chief among them — believe Mallett warrants a top-10 pick, while others have pushed him to the early second round.

Reasons for this forecasted fall can be divided into off and on-field concerns.

The former gives NFL brass most reason for pause, as personality and character defects can ruin a multi-million dollar investment, pushing a tantalizingly talented, cannon-armed prospect into a legacy landfill strewn with the likes of Dan McGwire, Jeff George, Ryan Leaf and JaMarcus Russell. Mallett pounders have strung together red flags they say wave ominously over his nearly 6-foot-7 frame...."

Here's a more nuanced look at how Mallett fared against the very best of the Top-25:

I mean, I get what's going on in the article

They make a lot of very valid points, that are very hard to argue.

However, more than a handful of times, I watched him put the whole team on his back and give everything he has to win. I don’t think it’s choking that hurts him, I think it’s trying to do to much to win, and putting his team in a bad spot. Which, dont get me wrong, is just as bad as choking. I just think choking is a harsh term to put on what he’s done.

Not to mention, other than that, every thing else anyone had a problem with before the season, he more than corrected. I read the article from the Florida newspaper that compared all the top qb’s in a very lengthy and detailed manner. They stated that his pocket presence was the best in college football.

Now though, it’s time we move on. I believe Tyler is our future, and expect big things out of this kid. Not to mention, the beast that is Knile Davis

You aint been around in awhile, maybe you haven't heard........I don't shine shoes no more
