Tough on the Eyes: Arkansas 56, Auburn 53

It stood to reason that after Saturday's emotionally draining win over ranked Michigan, these young Hogs would suffer a bit of a letdown. But, man, that first half was some letdown - the Hogs shot just 4 of 27 from the field before intermission. The eyesore that was the first 20 minutes prompted these two tweets, the first from Wally Hall and the second from Hawgs Illustrated (presumably written by Dudley Dawson):

That may have been the ugliest half of basketball in the history of Bud Walton Arena. Hogs shooting 14.8 percent from floor.

Over my 30 years covering Arkansas hoops, I have seen some really bad halves of basketball. This tops them all for both teams.

Fortunately, the Razorbacks were a good deal better in the second half (they shot 56 percent from the field in that time) but they never could put Auburn away, and the Tigers missed a last-second shot that would have sent the game into overtime.

B.J. Young led the way with 11 points (included in that total was a vicious dunk that he threw down with 20 seconds to play), and Rickey Scott (8 points) and Rashad Madden (10 points) had some big baskets in the second half. Not the easiest game to watch, but I'm not going to make too much of it. These guys are young, and they're undermanned: nights like this are going to happen. But they're also talented, and they're tough-minded: we've got some fun games ahead of us as well.

Let's get ready for the Crimson Tide.

A Mess of a Win

Whew, that was ugly. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t chuckle when Nobles missed the dunk after that great steal. Just one of those nights, you got to laugh to keep from screaming. I have to give it up to this team. I did not think they would be undefeated at home at this point in the season. I really don’t see a win in a game like this in the past few years. Almost makes you think there is some magic in the air, that something big is not that far around the corner. Well done Hogs.

Shutter...

Is there a limit on the number of times “ugly” can be used on a page? Channeling my Charles Barkley, I will say it was “turrible.” Yes, the Nobles breakaway epitomized the first half. It was like watching me shoot in the driveway.
Good news: Our RPI is ~63. I think this is the highest in several years. Not where we want to be but the Pel years had this number between 110 and 180.
Bad news: We are expected to lose 4 of the next 6.
Come on Hogs! Let’s pull out some wins and surprise some people starting with an Alabama team that just dropped their 4th straight.

Yes, that dunk flub was ghastly.

I would say that he took some ribbing from his teammates afterwards, but it’s not like anyone else had a much better shooting night. Watched it on ESPN3, and I really wanted to tune out after the first 20 minutes but I stuck it out, and glad I did.

The second half play was much, much better. The Hogs showed a lot of grit coming back, taking the lead, and finally holding the lead even when Big Mo flirted with the other side. When you see these young guys sticking together and learning how to win together, you have to be encouraged.

Glad I wasn't able to see it then, haha.

56 to 53 feels better, I guess, when you only can read about how it went down and didn’t have to witness the poor play itself.
