Arkansas Expats: Radio Alert!

As part of the ever-present Arkansas Expats multimedia onslaught, I'll be appearing on the T.J. Carpenter Show on the ESPN Radio affiliate in Fayetteville this afternoon. Stephen and I have both been guests on the show a few times this fall and it's always a lot of fun.

Today I'll be on at 3:30 Central time. if you're in Northwest Arkansas you can listen in on 92.1 the Ticket, and if you're anywhere else in the world you can go to their site and click the "listen live" link over on the left.

We now return you to our regularly scheduled carping about officiating and mocking Houston Nutt...

Are You Ready for Some Football??

Apologies for referencing that terrible Hank, Jr song, but I'm more excited about this football season than any other one I can remember and it's making me a little loopy. I'm guessing many of you are feeling the same way.

Since this is our first year covering football on the new Arkansas Expats site, I thought I'd share a few details about what we'll be doing on game days throughout the fall:

First of all, we'll put up an open game thread every Saturday so you can discuss the game while it's happening. This should be a fun way to interact with your fellow Hog fans, and if I may add a personal note I'll be counting on your help here to keep me posted on how the games are going since I live in a place (Berkeley, CA) where, for some reason, SEC television coverage takes a back seat to the Pac-10.

Following that, we'll put up a post game thread that, if all goes well, will be a place where we all talk about how awesome and spectacular and amazing the Hogs' performance was (at least 7-8 times this fall, that is).

The point of all this is to give you all the the opportunity to share your thoughts, voice your opinions and connect with other Razorback fans. The best part of doing this blog, hands down, has always been the little community of fellow crazies that has sprung up around it, and we're hoping these Saturday forums can be a way to get people to actively participate and enjoy it with us.

Woo Pig Sooie!!!

Introductory Hog Call

Howdy - and welcome to SB Nation's new blog about the Arkansas Razorbacks.

If by chance you weren't one of the millions, thousands, hundreds, multiple people who visited our previous site - RazorbackExpats.com - each day, please allow us to introduce ourselves ...

First off, our names are John Slater and Stephen Ursery.

When we grew up in Little Rock in the 1980s, few things gave us more pleasure than Razorbacks sports. Whether we were watching Alvin Robertson on the hardwood or Quinn Grovey on the gridiron, we were captivated in the way that kids everywhere are captivated when watching their athletic heroes. When the Hogs won, we were joyous; when they lost, crestfallen.

In the early 90s, we both moved out of the state (barely) to attend the same college in Memphis, Tenn. You might think that the obsession would have waned; on the contrary, it exploded. Encountering lots of people who didn’t like the Hogs – even some who (horrors!) hated the Razorbacks – our fandom kicked into overdrive. It also didn’t hurt that our small liberal arts college’s teams competed in the NCAA’s Division III and thus invited no real interest and that the Arkansas basketball team was enjoying the greatest half decade in its history.

After graduation, one of us ended up in San Francisco, the other in Atlanta. In the midst of establishing careers and building new lives in new places, following the Hogs fell off the radar a bit.

About three years ago, however, we felt ourselves being drawn back to our boyhood obsession. While trading e-mails about Darren McFadden’s Heisman candidacy, Houston Nutt’s various trials and tribulations, and the university’s often tragic and comic search for a new basketball coach, we rediscovered the way Arkansas athletics can so thoroughly captivate, frustrate and, especially, amuse us.

Thus, in August 2007, RazorbackExpats.com was born — just in time for more of Houston Nutt's trials and tribulations and the university's ooften tragic and comic search for a new football coach. And now, we're proud to join SB Nation by launching ArkansasExpats.com (we'll pause to let you compose yourself ... ).

We and our contributors - KevinHog, J. Hawg 3, The Hog Blogger and Whit E. Knight - try to talk about the Hogs in a spirit of good humor, balance and perspective. We don't file Freedom of Information requests for coaches’ cell phone records, and we don't have strokes over Willy Robinson's defensive schemes (maybe that's because, frankly, we're not terribly knowledgeable about them). We aim for lighthearted commentary, walks down memory lane, and Q&A's with former Hogs and the journalists covering the Razorbacks.

Whether you're someone who followed our old site or are reading us for the first time, we hope you'll stop by - and chime in - often. And don't limit your participation to the comment threads: the FanPost feature on the right side of the page allows you to make your own blog posts about the Hogs, and the FanShot feature lets you upload videos and pictures of the Razorbacks.

Before we go, we'd like to send a quick but much-deserved thanks to Chris Haines, Joel Hollingsworth, Tyler Bleszinski and the rest of the SB Nation crew for making our transition so easy and enjoyable. Thanks to their efforts, all of the posts from our former site have been moved over here and are ready for your perusal.

And now, on with the show ...

Staring Into the Void

Last night's entirely uninspiring but not at all unexpected loss to Florida not only marks the merciful end of the basketball season, it also signals the beginning of a loooong dead zone in the major Razorback sports before football kicks in again. (No offense to baseball or any of the other spring sports...they're just not our thing.)

But, never fear! Your intrepid observers and commentators at Razorback Expats will be bravely soldiering on through this slow period. Although we will be laying off most of our intern staff, our federal bailout check will be coming soon and that $6 billion should sustain us until August.

As long as players are getting arrested, Wally Hall is cranking out Pulitzer material and Lane Kiffin is doing stupid stuff we'll be able to find things to write about. And we have a few surprises up our sleeves, as well. Stay tuned!

New Hires at Razorback Expats, Inc.

It's a historic day here at Razorback Expats: after careful deliberation and an exhaustive nationwide talent search, we've decided to add four new writers to the site. They'll be joining Stephen and John [editor's note: actually, the unpaid interns write pretty much all the content as it is now] and have the green light to post their thoughts whenever inspiration strikes.

Don't worry...we won't be selling our share of the company and retiring to a tropical paradise somewhere just yet. But we are genuinely excited about having these new voices on the blog. They're going to add a lot.

So, it is with great pleasure that we introduce the new guys:

* The Hog Blogger - used to operate the now-legendary blog coincidentally titled "The Hog Blogger". He shut down his site when he entered the Witness Protection Program, but will be posting here when he's able to get to a computer.

* J. Hawg 3 - regular commenter who has already authored insightful posts on the football and basketball teams. Will be sharing his prognostication skills in a regular "Pick 10" feature that gamblers may find useful (not that we condone that sort of thing).

* KevinHog - another regular commenter and occasional poster who will be raising the level of discourse around here by bringing an academic and literary flavor to his posts. Keeps the blog thematically sound by being a genuine expat.

* Whit E. Knight - our resident historian, his three part series on the 1978 Final Four team earlier this year remains some of the best stuff ever posted on this site. He's a Southwestern/Rhodes grad, so you know he's a class act all the way.

Please give THB, J. Hawg, Kevin and Whit a warm Razorback Expats welcome, and keep an eye out for their posts ( (if you're curious, look for the name under each post to see who is writing what).
