What Arkansas Fans Will Remember About Hunter Mickelson

In light of Kansas adding top prospect Andrew Wiggins yesterday, that is now, at least, a pair of noteworthy additions for the Jayhawks in the past month. This is a column I wrote for my blog the day Hunter Mickelson announced his decision to transfer to play for Bill Self and Kansas.

Hunter Mickelson announced he will transfer to Kansas. Mickelson failed to meet many expectations coming out of high school.

I can remember watching Mickelson play in the state finals with Jonesboro-Westside back in 2011 in Hot Springs, Ark. Then-Arkansas head coach John Pelphrey was in attendance. Hunter had a very solid game, shooting 10-18 from the floor, scoring 24 points and grabbing 10 boards. He was a kid that was head-and-shoulders taller than nearly everyone he faced at the high school level, but wasn't the bulkiest kid. He was going to be the next big thing to come out of high school in Arkansas. With Mickelson's team losing to the 3 Lee brothers and Clarkesville in the final moments of the game, Jonesboro Westside looked to Hunter on the final play. Mickelson caught the ball and proceeded to take a fadeaway jumper from just inside the 3-point line over a pair of defenders. Clarkesville won the state title and Mickelson had to live with the final shot of his high school career, an air ball.

Mickelson was very highly touted coming out of high school, playing for Ron Crawford and the Arkansas Wings Elite team, and was ranked among the top 100 prospects in the country. He led his Jonesboro Westside squad to a 30-4 record, also. Hunter was another gem in a dynamite recruiting class put together by John Pelphrey that included BJ Young, Ky Madden, Devonta Abron (who transferred to TCU after his freshman season) and Aaron Ross (who never made it to campus because of academics). The recruiting class was ranked ninth best in 2011 and was sure to get Arkansas back to prominence. Now, all that remains from the class of 2011 is Ky Madden (who will be a key piece for Arkansas next season). The class certainly brought some exciting moments, but no postseason appearances to this point.

Arkansas fans saw Mickelson staying in state to play for the Razorbacks as a big positive. Scouts and fans alike thought he could come to Fayetteville and make an immediately impact and return Arkansas to the NCAA Tournament, a feat unseen since the days of Sonny Weems and Darian Townes. But maybe there was too much expectation for Mickelson to be the next big thing to come out of Arkansas, and too much hype. Then John Pelphrey was fired.

This is where we must give Hunter credit. He signed on with Arkansas with the notion that he would play under John Pelphrey. With Pelphrey, Mickelson was sure to flourish into the go-to big man for Arkansas and be a constant on the low block. But when Pelphrey was ousted, Mickelson stayed on, remaining loyal to his commitment to Arkansas. Shortly after, Mike Anderson was named the new head coach. Mickelson knew from that point on that he wasn't the best fit for this style of play, but he did what he could to make it work.

In his freshman year, after putting on 40 pounds between the end of his senior year of high school and freshman year at Arkansas, Mickelson started five games, averaging just over 17 minutes per ball game. Although his numbers his freshman season weren't spectacular (5 points and nearly 4 rebounds per game), Mickelson was second in the SEC in blocks with 72, behind only Anthony Davis. In my mind, I will always remember Mickelson at Arkansas for this dunk vs Vanderbilt (this may very well be the highlight of his time at Arkansas), not his shot blocking ability.

And after his freshman year, Arkansans had reason to believe that Mickelson would only improve between seasons one and two. Fans thought with a healthy Marshawn Powell, the addition of Coty Clarke, and an improved Mickelson, Arkansas could be a force to reckon with in year 2 of Mike Anderson's regime.

Then, during his sophomore year, I believe something snapped with Mickelson. Mickelson did not seem to be the same player he was his freshman season. Even in his first year on campus, Mickelson wasn't the most physical body, but in his second go-around at Arkansas he was much less effective on the floor. Mickelson is a finesse player* and people didn't like it. Mickelson shot just 20 free throws in his sophomore campaign. The bigger number was his blocks (39 blocks in 2012-13 compared to 72 in 2011-12). Mickelson was much less physical in year 2, much to the dismay of Hog fans after a positive freshman year.

*Proof: In two seasons, Mickelson shot just 51 free throws. The slow-footed, non-athletic Devonta Abron shot 89 free throws in just one year with the Hogs.

Mickelson, to his credit, is blessed with an above average jumper for a big man, which is an attractive asset for a big in a system like Kansas'. He could step out, shoot the ball and keep defenders honest. Maybe it was the fact he knew he could shoot the ball well that kept him from being a banger. In a guard oriented offense, Mickelson was often the odd man out at Arkansas.

If you ask any Arkansas fan, "what is your opinion of Hunter Mickelson," they will more than likely tell you he was soft and/or clumsy. The verdict on Mickelson is that he was a shot-blocker that didn't block shots well, and a rebounding big man that underachieved on the glass. Mickelson, no doubt, had a lot to live up to coming out of high school, and when he didn't meet expectations, he became a target of much criticism.

Mickelson isn't a banger, and he probably never will be. Hog fans will remember him as a soft big man, one that shied away from physical play and being a tweener, stuck somewhere between a 3 and 4-man that played in a system which didn't maximize his potential. He just didn't fit the system. Certainly, we wish him the best of luck as he continues his basketball career at Kansas, and thank him for his dunk vs Vanderbilt in his freshman year, having the best game of his career vs Robert Morris his sophomore year, and trying to make his situation work despite the circumstances.

Hogs head to Maui: The Official Arkansas Guide to the 2013 EA SPORTS Maui Invitational

This Thanksgiving, Arkansas will be traveling to the island of Maui for the 2013 EA SPORTS Maui Invitational where they will join Baylor, California, Dayton, Gonzaga, Minnesota, Syracuse and host Chaminade in the 30th edition of the premier early-season men's college basketball tournament. The 2013 Championship Round will take place November 25-27 as the Hogs will look for its first Maui championship in its third appearance and try to start the 2013-14 basketball season off with a bang.

Please let us know if you will be joining the Hogs in Maui or if you have any questions about the Tournament in the comments section. Aloha and mahalo.

What´s the story behind the Tournament? How did it all start?

On December 23, 1982…little known NAIA Chaminade upset top-ranked Virginia, led by three-time MVP Ralph Sampson, 77-72. Called "the greatest upset in college basketball history," the win put host Chaminade University on the map nationwide and led to the creation of the Maui Classic which is now known as the EA SPORTS Maui Invitational, the longest running early-season college hoops tournament. Read the full story written by Alexander Wolff in Sports Illustrated about the "Greatest Upset Never Seen."

What will my experience be like in Maui?

The Lahaina Civic Center provides college basketball’s best neutral court atmosphere. The intimately seated LCC, with only 2,400 seats, gives each team’s fan base an opportunity to provide a home court advantage at a neutral site game. There are few better basketball experiences when the LCC is full with the crowd supporting their teams. Don’t believe us? Take it from the coaches:

"Obviously, this is the pinnacle and the crème de la crème of all preseason tournaments. This is the kingpin and any other analogy you’d like to use. And that’s why it’s so special." – Mark Few, Gonzaga University, November 2009

"And there's something -- this atmosphere may be as good a neutral court atmosphere that you could play in. It's better than NCAA tournament atmosphere because you can feel the crowd. They're actually a part of it." - Bill Self, University of Kansas, November 2011

What are some of the best activities to do on island?

Go to the beach – Ka’anapali Beach, Lahaina was named America’s top beach in the 2013 Travelers’ Choice Beaches Awards

Attend a luau at Old Lahaina Luau

Snorkeling or diving adventure

Drive the road to Hana

Watch the sunrise at Haleakala National Park

Attend the EA SPORTS Maui Invitational

I’m sold, how do I buy an Arkansas Booster Ticket & Travel Package?

Arkansas Travel packages are available through Razorback Sports Travel.

The Whole State of Arkansas has Basketball Road Woes

Didn't notice this until I went back and read an old Pat Forde article.

Arkansas Razorbacks

15-1 at home

1-8 on the road or at neutral courts

Arkansas State Redwolves

12-2 at home

5-7 on the road or at neutral courts

Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions

8-2 at home

2-12 on the road or at neutral courts

Arkansas-Little Rock Trojans

12-4 at home

3-8 on the road or at neutral courts

Central Arkansas Bears

7-8 at home

3-7 on the road or at neutral courts

Total Home Record: 54 - 17

Total Away or Neutral Record: 14 - 42

While UCA is almost as bad at home as on the road, the rest of the teams are noticeably worse on the road.

Arkansas State has the best record of all teams and holds the best road record. UAPB has had to play 14 games on the road and they're road record is so bad that it overwrites their Home winning record.

I guess it's something about Arkansas it just runs so deep you have to be in the state to win basketball games.

None of these teams are projected to make it to the NCAA tournament (right now), but Arkansas State does have the only win over Sunbelt leading Middle Tennessee.

February 19th - Arkansas History

Man, it would be so much more interesting if the hogs were still recruiting football players or had a basketball game tomorrow night, but instead it's 2 whole days away. Though we do have a midweek baseball series starting today.

I thought why not do a little research and share some facts about this day in history... February 19th.

It's a good thing we're not playing basketball today. In the last four basketball games played on February 19th, the hogs are 2-4. With the 4 losses coming to Alabama 2011 (Tony Mitchell - 27 pts, 9 rebs, 3 asts, 2 stls, 2 blks), Vanderbilt 2005, Kentucky, 2003, and LSU in 2000 and with none of the losses being closer than 11 points.

In 2010 on February 19th, Scotty Thurman was inducted into the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame

Let me know if you can dig up something else interesting.

Where's The Love for Jonathan?

As we all know, Alex Collins IS coming to the University of Arkansas(Dear God, please don't make me change that sentence). Every Arkansas fan is pumped about the decision. Even a couple of former hogs have reached out to him on twitter(See Ronnie Brewer and Felix Jones). Everyone is about ready to crown him the Big Man on Campus, but we're all forgetting about the guy that will be in front of him at RB.

Please welcome one Jonathan Williams, currently the starting RB for the razorbacks. Williams finished 3rd on the team in rushing last season as a true freshman(behind Knile Davis and Dennis Johnson) and had his "break-out game" against Kentucky, when he caught two long TD's on the same Ronnie-Wingo-wheel-route play. Williams showed flashes of an All-SEC type running back this season. He has decent hands, above-average speed, and he can definitely shake his way around defenders.

Williams was a tad bit frustrated on twitter, when a hog fan predicted a couple statistics for the 2013-14 season. This fan said Collins would have somewhere around 1200 yards and 10+ TD's and Williams would have about 700 yards. J-Will then asked for this guy to stop tweeting him. I say that to make this point... In no way should J-Will be frowned upon for being frustrated here. He has earned his stripes this past season. He battled it out in the trenches against SEC talent. He finished with over 400 All-purpose yards. Not bad by any stretch, So why is all this suddenly being forgotten about????

Yes. Alex Collins will be a good SEC player in the future. He is a person with amazing character and talent. In no way am I bashing him or the talent that he has. The point that I'm making is that Jonathan Williams is our starting Running Back for the 2013-14 season(and has a good chance to be the starter in the years after that). So, yes, show Alex Collins some razorback love. But, DO NOT name him the starting running back over a young man who has already proven his talent in the toughest conference in football. Alex Collins will have his chance to prove himself worthy of being an SEC starter. But, until that happens, I will forever believe that Jonathan Williams is the best running back, and one of the top 10 players, on the team.

If you haven't heard, South Plantation (FL) running back Alex Collins just committed to Bret Bielema and the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Collins is the highest rated running back on 247sports.com. He is also a five star running back according to Scout.

So, needless to say this is a pretty huge get for Bret Bielema in a very short recruiting cycle, after the Razorbacks looked like they weren't going to land local RB Altee Tenpenny. It would have made more sense for Bielema to land a running back of Collins' caliber in his first recruiting cycle (the 2014 class), but that he's done it so soon is quite impressive.

If you watch his highlight tape, Collins looks like a hybrid of Wisconsin's Montee Ball and Michigan's Denard Robinson. He has a similar level of speed to Robinson, and Ball's power mentality. He's not afraid to take a hit but can also juke a defender sometimes.

Various news outlets on Collins' commitment (free):

Rivals: Collins Picks Arkansas:

There's a first time for everything, and new Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema gave the Razorbacks a first to remember Monday night. Arkansas has never had any luck pulling the top players in Florida away from the Gators, Seminoles and Hurricanes, but that changed when four-star running back Alex Collins chose the Hogs in front of a national television audience Monday at around 9:30 p.m. central.

SB Nation's Bud Elliott:

Arkansas landed five-star running back recruit Alex Collins Monday as he announced for the Razorbacks over Miami on Fox Sports South. Alex Collins is an elite Florida running back in a class filled with them. He really burst onto the scene quickly, only picking up football as a high school junior after playing basketball and lacrosse. He was tough to miss: 5'11, 207 pounds, and capable of running a 4.45 40. He quickly rose to the top of several recruiting lists, with Scout tabbing him as a five-star prospect and the No. 3 running back in the country.

Sun Sentinel: Miami Hurricanes Miss on Five Star Running Back Alex Collins:

The Razorbacks were late comers to the Collins recruitment party — it was only after Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema jumped to Arkansas that Collins began to consider the Hogs.

Sports Illustrated: Collins Spurns Gators(?) to Play for Hogs:

Collins was rumored to be recommitting to Miami, and his selection signals the continued free fall of the Hurricanes' class. Coach Al Golden may have already lost Army All-American offensive lineman Denver Kirkland after he reportedly offered Kirkland an ultimatum to commit or risk losing his scholarship offer. Now, they've lost out on one of the state's top running backs who was once committed. At Arkansas, Collins could see playing time as soon as next season. The talented back should fit well into the Hogs' run-heavy offense.

Bleacher Report on Why Collins will Thrive at Arkansas:

Shifty and elusive in the open field, Collins changes direction quickly and can make defenders miss with ease. He isn't the fastest player in the 2013 recruiting class, but he does have the ability to hit another gear once he gets behind the defense.

Overall, Collins brings the entire package to the table and he is arguably the most talented runner Bielema has ever had. Now, when you combine that with a coaching staff that has a long history of producing big time runners, Collins and the Arkansas running game are in terrific hands.

If you didn't get a chance to see Alex Collins' announcement on Fox Sports South, you can watch it here (for as long as it remains active).
Congratulations to Bret Bielema and the Arkansas Razorbacks on landing Alex Collins!

Give Mike Anderson Some Time

Razorback fans need to take a huge chill pill when it comes to the Arkansas Razorback Basketball program. Its only year two of the Mike Anderson era. He has brought back the fastest 40 mins of basketball style to Arkansas. Anderson has had some success quickly at other schools. I think that might be why people are already expecting big things from him. The difference is there were players that could play that style better. Anderson inherited some not so great players for his style.

Fans need to give him some time to get his players in that can run that style. He is off to a good start with that and next year there are a few more guys that are coming in that should be able to give him a greater chance of getting his style implemented. I am just as frustrated as everyone that the basketball program has been down as long as it has.

Nolan and Anderson spoiled us in the 90's with the dominance the program had. I can remember watching the NCAA selection shows right after the basketball program fell from dominance and the announcers talked about how it was different to see the bracket without the Hogs. Being frustrated and voicing concerns is one thing. Calling up sports radio stations and calling for Mike Anderson to be fired is ridiculous.

Fans need to just relax. I have full faith that Anderson will get the job done and take the Hogs back to being a tournament team every year and maybe recapture that glory from 1994. I have a strong feeling that Arkansas is on the rise when it comes to all sports programs. Bottom line is fans need to just sit back, relax, and give Mike Anderson some time to work his magic. Go Hogs! WPS!

I am sorry if you guys hate me but the sec pride is really showing accoriding to espn mizzou ranks in at 36 and Arkansas ranks in at 19 out of 119 football programs. Now in the 50's and 60's Missouri and Arkansas was neck and neck and the 70's mizzou ranks in at 32 and Arkansas 13 but in the 80's we we were average and the 90's we sucked. I think were a lot like Wisconsin or iowa and Arkansas is like texas am, but really those are solid spots for both schools. And for those kU fans who say were dead even we are 40 spots better than them. lets burn that piece of shit town and skin that leftist bird

Rules for fans of programs searching for a new head coach

In the new era of Internet "news" and everybody and their brother's dog having a Sports Blog. I present you with ten simple rules for fans of programs searching for a new head coach:

NEVER BELIEVE rumors on the Twitter-verse.

If a rumor is floated by a fringe sports blog it is probably not true.

If a Regional or National sportswriter or publication is using a fringe sports blog as its source, then it is probably not true.

Do not repeat rumors listed above, as they are not true.

The only people that know something are the people that are not talking.

Spreading false rumors does not increase your credibility, neither does commenting on them.

Spreading untrue rumors makes you and your program look bad.

Agents and fans for other programs will "float" rumors to better their coach/program at the expense of the one doing the search. Look at the real source of the rumor to determine if it has any truth in it.

You will know who the next coach is when the administration announces it. You are wasting too much time trying to figure out beforehand who the hire will be. (If your opinion mattered, you would probably be involved in the selection process)

NEVER BELIEVE rumors on the Twitter-verse.

This freakin' hurts. I do believe the future now hangs in the balance. Hopefully, the future isn't gone completely. I didn't expect to win against Bama, but it would be nice to get on the board. Maybe I need a distraction or something. It will have to be a very long distraction. Like, a few years worth. Anyone have a time machine I could borrow?

Reality Catches Up With Razorbacks

It sounds like a teaser for an episode of HBO's True Blood, but Arkansas fans found out just how true it is on Saturday against the University of Louisiana at Monroe in Little Rock: You can't outrun what you really are.

In the Hogs' case, there were a lot of things they-we, I guess I should say as a lifelong fan-had been outrunning for the last four years. Bobby Petrino's karma, mediocrity, and the fickle nature of fandom. However, as I sat in the stands in the south end zone of War Memorial Stadium, watching the eighth-ranked Razorbacks lose to a middling Sun Belt team, reality finally came crashing down.

Hello from Colorado Springs

Oddly enough my wife and I were having dinner at a local steakhouse and met some fellow Hogs fans and they introduced me to this site. I have been a longtime poster on Scout and Hogville.net and just wanted to stop in to say howdy and say how nice it is to meet fellow Hog fans and introducing my New Mexico wife to southern hospitality. Looking forward to getting to know more Hog fans that are living outside of our great state.

Spring Ball Kicks Off on Wednesday!

Time to hit the line for the 2012-2013 football season. Spring practice starts Wednesday March 14th, 2012. Anyone excited about this year? Seeing Knile back is going to be one heck of a highlight, in my opinion. What do you guys think? Who will be the impact players? Anyone have any intel on the new recruits? Do you think freeing Willy will be the game changer we need to compete with the upper echelon of the SEC? Does Paul Haynes have mojo? Any pre-preseason Rasputin-ish predictions?

http://www.arkansasrazorbacks.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=6100&ATCLID=205396209
